Hi /out/,

Scottish anon here. I'm abroad (have been for almost a year and a half) and I miss Scotland. So feel free to ask questions about /out/ activities and I'll answer them/post pics/post recommendations for places to go. Climbing/skiing/walking/camping/bothies/fishing/packrafting questions welcome.

I've been to Scotland a few times for some of the mountain bike trails not too far away from the border, forest of ae and kielder which crosses the border and 1 more but I can't remember their names they're part of a group called 7 Stanes. I've never been walking there though although I'd like to so which places are the most scenic and isolated? In January this year I was working in this hotel and they have lots of old leather bound books around just for decoration, I saw one just on the side and picked up and took it home it was called the lure of the west and it was by Duncan MacPherson iirc. It's a travel diary written in the late 40s following Duncan who was a chemist from Kyle of Lochalsh and his wife's journey through the Highlands. It was interesting to read and I intend on maybe following his route one day and seeing the places he mentioned.

/out/ in scotland is pretty good as long as you like mountains.

Though it never snows except from on said mountains and rains most of the time. Also not as remote as a lot of other countries as estates own pretty much everything in the highland and no where in Britain is further than 6 miles from a road / trail.

A nice place to visit for /out/ people but don't expect NA sort of /out/.

I've bagged a few munros and want to start getting into trekking/camping properly, but I have no idea how to go about planning a babby expedition route (i've been reliant solely on walkhighlands so far) - any tips for dipping my toes into going /out/ properly? I'm central belt scum, spent most of my time out by Arrochar so far. Thinking about practising nav stuff out there.

Firstly your gonna need to assembly some kind of sleep system if you haven't already and bear in mind weight matters especially when ur hill walking which u almost certainly will be in Scotland. I remember the first trip I planned in the lake district I bought an OS map from Millet's and just arbitrarily drew a line along walking paths from Braithewaite to Red Tarn at Helvellyn. I only made it to Watendlath and slept on one of the hills over looking the Tarn in a 25 year old bivvi bag of my Dad's I got absolutely fucking drenched. Best option I think it's a bivy bag, roll mat, sleeping bag and tarpaulin with 2 trekking poles but you can use a tent if u want. In short just bring the bare necessities and only things you are sure you will actually use. If you want you can do what I did (I think it's more fun) or you can look at pre established routes, there's probably many but the only one I know in Scotland is the Annandale Way from Moffat to the Solway Coast which is beautiful, if you do this you can get a route book with maps included which will tell you everything you'll need to know

Nowhere is further than 6 miles from a road/trail? If you're counting truly marginal trails that might be true, but plenty of places are a lot further than that from anything that you could ride a bike along.

I'd recommend getting a tent, and not a tarp. Tarps are great if you like somewhere with no midges. In Scotland, however, there will come a time when you will have your face eaten alive by the little bastards if you try and bivvy out.

Tent, 3 season sleeping bag, inflatable or foam rollmat; that combo will take you far.

Get some decent walking boots, nice walking socks, comfy trousers (synthetic material), tops etc. Go to Decathlon. I think there's one near Glasgow, there's definitely one near Edinburgh.

Whatever you do, and I cannot stress this enough, take any advice from this board with a pinch of salt. There are a lot of LARPers, and a lot of Americans, who are generally not clued up on what Scotland is like.

Arrochar is a great place to start and Walkhighlands is a great resource. Definitely practice your nav; it's the basic, fundamental skill that will keep you safe in the hills.

Look into doing some two-day walks, using bothies, once Corona-chan has stopped being an issue.

Good luck and enjoy the hills! Oh and don't get avalanched or die in a whiteout, but if you do tell them that some anons on a Finnish berry-fermenting forum gave you advice.

Hey anon, I'm Scottish too. I've never been /out/ - do you have any gear recommendations? I really want things that I can use near year round. I recently came up with enough money to drop out of mainstream society and just wander for a bit, any general advice would be useful.
Also with regards to bothies, they don't seem to be printed on maps - if I'm wandering around the whole country how am I supposed to find them?

You can pick up a new Vango Banshee for £150, less in some places/second hand. As for a sleeping bag, depends whether you want down or synthetic. I almost exclusively use down (for everything from 2-week nordic ski crossings, to winter camping in Scotland, to alpinism) but down is pricier. In Scotland the temp rarely goes below -10 in the glens, so you can get away with a three season down or synthetic bag IF you know what you're doing. If I'm going lightweight I take a nalgene and a stove, then before I go to bed I boil some water and turn my nalgene into a hot water bottle. This then lives at the bottom of by sleeping bag. Put a beanie on your head, a buff on your neck and you'll be nice and toasty.

As to buying a bag, GO outdoors has them for £80 or so.

Don't forget a rollmat. I prefer an inflatable model, but foam models are cheaper and more reliable. The thermarest roll-up foam model is like £45, you can get a multimat for less.
