Here's the deal, OP. You gotta pick the right beach(es) for that.
There are tumble beaches, and then there are straight beaches in which the sand smoothly and slowly ramps down into the ocean. Choose the latter, preferrably if there's little to no waves breaking there.
Then all you gotta do is swim sideways but be careful with currents. You put one foot into the water, you can feel if there's a strong current.
>Always, ALWAYS, wear flippers. That's unnegotiable>Do carry one of those thingies you wrap around your wrist for a gulp of air, you never know when a wave will keep you rolling underwater for a few minutes>Always let people know you're going for a swim. Warn at least one person, no matter where he/she is, that if you don't call back in (x) hours, they must call the coast guard>Watch out for surfers. Seen some nasty shit happen in my time>First sign of dusk, get the FUCK out of the water. Swimming in the dark might look tempting, but if you ever need rescue, you're good as dead>You ARE going to have all kinds of encounters. Massive turtles, urchins, all kinds of fish and birds, the occasional sharkFor some people, the above is the very reason they swim in the ocean in the first place. Some people are scared to hell and back of those, though, so be warned
>Know your limitsThe ocean doesn't fuck around. You get a cramp, you die. Respect your limits at all times
I liked to go swimming to nearby islands for fun. For that, I always had a dry bag with a lighter, a pocket knife and some kind of flammable tissue like a few napkins. You never know if the currents are gonna trap you there for the night. Spending the night all wet and cold isn't any fun.
