They'll burn just about any liquid fuel in a pinch, but you need to stick to proper lighter fluid except in emergencies because the shit that doesn't burn as clean, like kerosene, gums up the wick, and shit that burns too well, like gasoline, tends to fucking explode or burns hot enough to damage the lighter. Buy one of those plastic inserts to keep the fuel from evaporating or it'll be gone in a week, and keep a spare flint in the bottom.
Disposable Bics are best for their shelf life; toss one in your gear and forget about it until you need it. A Zippo or a proper butane lighter (not the cheap Chinesium shit) belong in your pocket.
Matches are more convenient for certain things; it's easier to strike a match and then insert it amongst your kindling inside a stove than it is to hold a flaming lighter sideways at the edge of your kindling. Storm matches will light when wet, burn underwater, and burn in the wind.
Always have more than one option for fire. I keep a Zippo in my pocket, a Bic in my pack, and a vial of storm matches in my mess kit.
