It is "relatively" wild compared to a lot of places. There's still wolves to be found and much/most of the land is still forested and hasn't been cut in some time.
It doesn't compare in terms of wilderness to a lot of other places, which I have explored extensively, and so yeah, Muskoka leaves much to be desired. But, I still think it is "relatively" wild, especially considering that millions of people live within a 1.5 hour drive of the place.
I think the area really needs to be careful however, that it doesn't decimate the very natural wildness that people treasure it for. I've witnessed useless road expansions, rampant powerboating, an adult loon with a severed neck from a passing propellor, and continual cottage development.
Unfortunately the area is gorgeous and if you go much further north you quickly transition into Boreal, which is great, but is not the same.
