Just ordered myself a new axe and I bought some of pic related to oil the handle did I fuck up? What does /out/ use on their handles and is this going to fuck up my handle if I use it?

It’s an alright finish, but despite the name it’s not tung oil. That has a petroleum based varnish in it. You’re either looking for tung oil (hard to find), or boiled linseed oil (easy to find). Don’t burn your house down with boiled linseed oil assuming you use that.

I would just go to Home Depot/Lowe’s and get a quart of boiled linseed oil and a can of paste wax. Rub in like 6-8 coats of BLO on the handle with 0000 steel wool. Then wait a few days and apply a coat of paste wax. Add another coat of paste wax every now and then depending on how much you use it

I heard once that there is no "true' tung oil, it's different from manufacturer to manufacturer. don't know if that 's true or not.
Linseed oil is what you want but that tung oil will do just fine, I've used it myself and it works.

Actual Tung Oil exists but you usually have to buy it at specialist woodworking stores or online. If it says Tung Oil "Finish" then theres basically no tung oil in it. Tung is a naturally drying oil that polymerizes with exposure to the air so it forms a water resistant finish.

Its good, I use it for rifle stocks and wood turning projects. Rub it down hard with a 000 abraisive pad once it drys enough to not be tacky to touch. That'll prevent it from glossing over.

Tung oil can not be used over any kind of finish or else it leaves milky streaks.
It has to be used on bare wood.

I got walnut oil to make a christmas gift this year, was thinking of its hardening properties for an alder cane. Opinions? Stick with linseed, keep the walnut for spoons and whatnot?
