What kind of boots does /out/ wear? I just got a pair of these Vasque Breeze GTX two months ago and have put about 160 miles on them since and they’re beginning come loose inside and create hot spots on my feet. How long are boots supposed to last?

Depends on the environment, how hard you are on boots, and what kind of boots. Most athletic people will get about a year out of a boot.

Pretty rocky I would say, plenty of hills as well. Appalachia is where I’ve been doing a majority of my hiking. About 5 miles a day 4 days a week, plenty muddy too.

Rocks are really hard on the exterior of boots and the cushion/support. For me I tend to ruin the boot's exterior or the cushion well before the sole. Like you I get bad hot spots but my feet also become numb. Replacing the insole helps but it's not enough. Boots made for a more Military environment hold up best for me. Like the civilian Solomon quest.

I never roll my ankle with good boots. Main reason I wear boots is for ankle protection. I don't think strength has much to do with it. It's a weak point of the human body.

the salomon quests are useless in wet weather, especially for the price. i had a pair, leaked water in constantly and the sole fell off after a month of walking in them 10mins a day

I live in based NC so I usually go through either blue ridge or the black mountains. This weekend I was thinking about going to grandfather mountain but if the weather keeps up like it is I probably will just stay home.

looking for new boots.
The problem is I don't know what kind of conditions I will have to deal with.
Arid hot conditions and vast flat land certainly; but likely also jungle, light snowfall is not out of the question.

I lean towards more ankle support and a flatter sole sliding on mud sucks but I cannot climb with bricks on my feet.
I had traditional army boots but could not keep them dry and kept getting nasty foot bacteria issues.
By current boots are just regular walking boots but I wore through the sole, so am now walking kind of barefoot.

That rating system is retarded. You need to go by how warm of a boot you need and what kind of crampons you'll be useing. For example your pick would be miserable in the winter and spring but is probably considered a b2 or b3. Really stupid Euro system. You'll need newmatic or strap crampons for those.
Find out if you fit better in Scarpa or LA Sportiva and then select a boot for your needs.

They get a good review for Scottish winter mountaineering, which is what i'll be using them for. I'm not needing an alpine boot just something a bit firmer than my Meindl leather boots for hiking in the Cairngorms when the snow firms up on the summits.

I wear 5.11 tactical ATAC boots. Not very water-resistant but I live in the desert so it works fine for me. Threw in some inserts and shit's nice and comfy.

Bought these a month or so ago and have enjoyed quite a few hikes with them so far, though no multi-day hikes yet. The leather is good and isn't showing real signs of wear yet, which I presume is good. If I consider what others think I do feel like a buyfag for getting them but that may simply just be the way it has to be

I had a pair of Chinese issue ones but I ditched them.
The rubber sole didn't offer enough support, they were great for what they were designed for but awful for hard surfaces, you just lost so much energy with them twisting.
Also strange as it may sound, while the dry out quickly they also struggle to occlude water- so your socks are soaked the first puddle you step in.
Maybe I'm just a pussy, I'm sure there's a rationale behind this dynamic like when you have to sleep in your boots- doing that in leather boots gets you mad footrot, you could legitimately smell my feet from 50 yards.

I'm hoping modern materials and money can get me something better.
25th guinea pigged new US issue boots, but neither was actually bought and the two finalists just got fat contracts for as-needed

The zipper is generally pretty good but does have a few drawbacks. I find that mine gets stuck on one of the boots every once in a while. Generally good though.

Had these going on five years now. Hike and backpack in WA year round, and so far the only problem I’ve encountered is the toe is just now this winter starting to peel away from the sole. Light, breathable, and hold up to snow and mud if you’ve got decent wool socks on. Best boots I’ve owned and I know they live saved my clumsy ass from rolling my ankle on multiple occasions.

It looks like the sole doesn’t have much grip and maybe not much ankle support, but for just walking around it should be fine. I wouldn’t hike in them.

Snake boots are fine if you’re okay with the way they fit, I’ve never worn them but lmthey look like they’d be uncomfortable to me. I would maybe look for some snake pants or try some putees. It’s pretty dry there right? So maybe look for a breathable boot that’s not necessarily waterproof that can still give you some ankle support and maybe resist snake bites but isn’t as tall.

Cutting boots out of the life literally saved my knees. I used to have really bad IT band problems, and also used to fall for the boots-or-nothing rhetoric. Couldn’t hike more than 10 miles without limping. I told my podiatrist about my knee pain and they suggested I switch to trail runners, I bought a pair of 4mm drop brooks and never looked back. I backpacked 20+ mile days almost all summer

I'm trying to find good boots for backpacking and going for walks in the forest with my dog. I'm mostly worried about getting wet feet if there is heavy rain and messing up my ankles, if I trip over some deadwood or roots while walking of trails. Since I fucked up my left foots achilles tendon a few years back I mostly wear high leather boots, that provide good support for my feet, but I think for longer hikes some more breathable boots might be a better choice. I'm located in Baltic states, so we have lots of forests and a fairly mild climate, with no large hills, so I'm a bit sceptical on getting some heavy and stiff leather alpine boots. I found these Hanwag Banks GTX walking boots in a local store, they fit me quite well, however I'm a bit worried that they might not last very long if I use them regularly and that they are not quite stiff enough if I plan to go backpacking with them anywhere that isn't a well kept trail, since I'm worried about fucking up my feet again. Sorry for the blog post, I just wanted to be clear about the use of the boots.

That's probably due to the gtx. Hot spots usually come from your feet suffocating and overheating. (((Goretex))) does a pretty shit job of keeping your feet dry in harsh conditions and increases dry times by a lot. I think ankle support is a meme as well but experience may vary

Chinkshit that falls apart fast but they really are superior to hiking boots in every aspect besides maybe kicking steps in snow

I've been enjoying lightweight barefoot sandles. They're comfy and made in my home town. I'm sure my feet will be getting crushed by talus though.

Recently picked up a pair of Gamont Ramblers as I needed something more sturdy for the amount of hiking I've been doing as of late. Found them to be really comfortable once I loosened the laces over the toebox.
Before that I was just wearing my Lowa Renegades (The shoe, not the boot) but the sole has been completely destroyed through wearing them around work. Carpet really fucks up shoes.

Love these boots, they were a gift but I dont plan on buying another pair unless I win the lottery. Suprised my quicklaces havent busted after how many times ive had to uncrimp them.
I want all black leather boots, not plastic bullshit ugly neo-cop looking shit, black leather all around, no tacticool plastic bs. With REAL lugs to boot. I was thinking danners or whites. Any other brand or even models I could consider?

Posting for posterity. Everyone can use a pair of wellies. Throw a pair of aftermarket gel inserts in there, and they'll get through slop for years. I'm in mine for work every day (wetland delineation and surveying), but I'll also throw 'em on for yardwork and anything else. They're just so handy to have around. Pant legs inside for mud, outside for dirt.
$15 for the boots at any self-respecting farm supply store, $10 for the inserts, perfect boot.

If you're looking for non-Chinese boots then Meindl, Lowa, and Mammut are a good place to start as they're made in Germany, Slovakia, and Romania respectively. Scarpa do a couple boots in Italy but it's mostly Chinese these days.

Thank you Anon's. I went with a different Hanwag boots in the end - Tatra II GTX. All the reviews I could find for them were positive, they also seemed a bit more rugged and stiffer, then my first choice. I have been testing them for the last two days while walking my dog in the forest and they are great. It feels like I wearing a have a pair of heavy platform sneakers, they are very comfortable and support my ankle quite well. I'm a bit worried that I should have went up just half a size, not a full size like I did, since I have to pull the laces really tight for a snug fit. I might be able to fix that with just a pair of thick hiking socks, but maybe the little extra space might be a good thing for longer walks, when my feet really swell up. I hope to get out for a hike in the weekend, so I will report back after a more proper test, but so far they really seem like a very good pair of boots

I have used hanwag for one year now. They feel good on the feet and i havent had any blisters. After a year one of the seams started to unravel and I got them replaced for free. Maybe it was bad luck or maybe the quality is bad but as long as they keep replacing them for free i dont really care

You're looking for as little stitching on the upper as possible. Higher quality leather hiking boots will be made from a single piece of leather for the upper and have a full rubber rand (this isn't always the case though as some do traditional double stitch boots),

I have taken mine on a 1-month 300+ mile long hike and they served me very well. After walking through some deep water I had to dry them out over a fire & it got too close so now they have some fire/soot stains on the inner. but that just adds character. They seem to hold up very well, I haven't noticed anything failing within the 2 years I've had them.

Bullshit, I've had multiple pairs of basic training and jungle boots, also every brand of sport hikers you could think of through my work voucher. None of them compare it terms to durability or comfort to scarpas, the military boots are tough, but not comfortable. I've been wearing my Asolo Flame GTX boots for a couple of years now I think and they're holding up great. My only gripes are that they're described as being shock absorbent and having good grip and I find neither to be true. In winter I wear wool inserts in them for warmth which helps a little with the hardness but the trails I walk often have boulders to scramble up and if it's wet and slippy, the lack of grip is a pain.
Anyone know if their newer boots have better soles?

These are going for pretty cheap. Are they worth it to buy for hikes (as opposed to days long treks)? Apparently they were also used by the brits in the Falklands. They seem like they could be a meme but I'm not 100% sure how so.

Every boot to show is a compromise. Use the right tools for the job.

Germans abandoned their wellington design at end of ww2 for laces. It's inefficient for traveling but the rubber can help with shit farm chores. Plenty of surplus as a lot of current wellies are made with materials that delaminate and break down.
A good alternative for cold weather is mickey mouse boots. More often seen in Alaska. Black has less insulation than white. Traction sucks.

If you want a half rubber boots, look into Schnees for US or Lundhags for EU. Bottom can be resewn for a long life, but heavy and not much flex. Some recommend bean boot, but not much traction and worse than two above.

Going into larp territory for the welted boots. Problem with these are either insulation that will not outlast the boot or poor to no insulation. Plus, these boots are heavy still. My only focus for owning these are SHTF, but would avoid at all other costs. I working wildland fire and the amount of injuries and disability is overwhelming. Whites and Nick's in Spokane WA most often recommended. I believe a new one is Jake's in same town. Sorry, Danners, Wescos, are not as good. You can also find surplus like Austrian mountain boot or for cheaper Corcoran's.
I think the best compromise in this field is Limmers Boots. Lighter, mountain boot, good fit, easy to resolve. Their off the shelf versions are made by Meindl in Germany.

There is also polyurethane boots. Most modern shoes are made with foam, either eva or polyurethane. It is subject to hydrolysis, breaking down accelerated with disuse. A lot of people store shit over winter or forget to wear and the sole peels off. This is also why eva modern shoes redditors shill over are often said to be thrown out after 500 miles as the foam wears out.

Allegiance Footwear is done by the original makers of Timberland before they closed US factory. They make the upper and have it lasted by Thorogood since the direct attach machines cost millions.
I think this is the best compromise for an every day utility versus a trail runner. I personally use the Norwegian M-77 by Alfa.

If I go lower and lighter, I just wear sneakers. Still testing moccasin companies like Footskins. There's also companies in US that make very low volume rubber vibrant shoes instead of eva foam. Sodhoppers uses a tire shavings adhesive outsole to mend the outsole. Softstar shoes in Oregon. Native Earth in California also has a lot of options for leather shoes with custom outsoles. Also trying out Xero but don't believe it is as durable.

Lastly have a pair of crocs that have many miles. Sunlight can cause some models to shrink if you leave them out but mine have survived years and a varmint trying to eat at them.

Figure out what tool you need in the categories I put above before the model.

Insulation, traction, durability, every day utility. I go light to build muscle and avoid injury until I need size up for warmth, backpacking, or extreme traction. But for 70% of it, letting my feet do the work in light shoes is the best for body health and injury free. I live in Pacific NW and use boat shoes (nylon upper with rubber sole, no foam, and breathing holes) with a wool insole I got for 5-10 usd for most of my days.

Ankle support is to mitigate the negative aspects caused by boots with stiff tick sole and elevated heel. It increases the risk of stepping wrong as you tend to land on you heel and the muscles stabilizing the ankle isn't engaged like when you land on mid/fore foot. Try walking on your heels vs tipping on your toes.
So when you step wrong gravity is already doing it's work before you react and you might end up with a twisted ankle.

I had a full leather pair that looked only mildly used after about 1000km. Unfortunately they didn't fit my feet well so it was a painful process. I ended up reselling them for about 1/3 what I originally paid..

Do it, they are great boots. I have used them pretty much every day since I got them. They really require almost no breaking in and are really comfy, I couldn't stress this enough. Last weekend I used them for a quick little hike in the forest on some logging trails and off in the bushes for a bit. The leather and gore-tex lining work great together and my feet were dry after 3 hours of stomping through ice and snow. How ever I will be getting some ice cleats next week, since the grip isn't that great on the icy roads, but then again I don't know any boots that wouldn't slip a bit with the weather we had. I got them on a sale as well, since they do cost a lot, but I think they are totally worth it.

I looked and Keen boots as well, before going for Hanwag. I chose the letter, since many of the reviews for Keen's often mentioned that they come apart after a few months use, with lace hooks and other weak parts just breaking because of poor quality. Keen's might be a bit cheaper, but I think boots or footwear in general is one of those things you should really invest properly, since you get what you pay for and you are going to use them heavily. I wore vasque talus ultra dry for about 4 years in all weather conditions mainly in the northeast but some rockies and desert hiking too (honestly my feet never really got cold even though there was no real insulation) the soles basically have no tread left and the soles started peeling off.

I got a pair of timberlands plymouth trail for christmas and they feel good ootb so hopefully they hold up as well

Really good entry level boot as they're comfortable out of the box and can get them at a very reasonable price on sale.
I'd spend an extra £50-100 to get a leather pair from Scarpa, Meindl or Zamberlan though, as I got more into my /out/ings I soon burned through my pair of Salomon boots.
I'm currently on Meindl Vakkum boots and I find them a better quality boot.

Because I'm contemplating a transfer at work were I currently don't have to have steel toes to another dept. where I would have to have safety/steel toe boots but my experience with steel toes boots in the past has been that the soles are rock hard (so they don't wear out and buyers won't complain about spending all kinda money on worn out boots after a year or two) and this causes heel, knee and back problems after marching around a concrete factory floor all day erry day.

tl;dr I need SOFT soled steel/safety toe work boots

Extremely based. I love mine I wear them walking the dog out in the woods, fishing and when I’m out in the yard and it’s wet. Perfect for mud season in New England. The only thing I found is they run wide and my foot is kind of narrow so I put an insole to get a better fit.

They definitely do, for what they are made for. If you spend multiple days in the woods or low mountains typical of northern Europe where it's usually cold and wet, a leather boot that can be dried out is far superior to a goretex boot. They're easy to maintain with wax/fats and can be repaired/resoled.
It's just that you don't really need them in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We got different view points of extreme. For example my La Sportiva G2 SM are on the extreme end for me. On the tactical end I'm unaware of any leather boot actually made for fast roping. The latter has no use to me but something I see in modern mil boots.
Multiple days in leather boots sounds like misery. Add rain and that's torture.

said, leather boots might be better is certain environments and for certain uses, for example if you plan to go off trail a lot and know your boots will get banged up in the process and live up north ( where I come from). However, if you plan to stick to trails, use lighter packs and use the boots in hot and/or dry environments, synthetics might be a better choice, since they are more breathable and lighter. I see boots as a tool for getting around and supporting your feet while carrying the weight of a backpack, so I think one should choose the right pair for the job. I don't think there is one pair of boots that work for everything and every environment

I've found buying two boots will greatly increase the life but leather still gets beat to shit. I need rubber toe caps for the boot yo have a chance. Leather toes will get scuffed and create holes. I've also had a heal get peirced on a stick with a pair. They're a joke.
The most versatile boot I have ever used is the quest. They stay dry and I use them from summer to winter. Below 30f is a bit too cold though. Around 0f is a no go.

I've been in lapland only during winter so I really can't comment on that. A friend of mine goes there every summer for a week long trip. National parks, in general, are good for trekking.
