>>1960712Ok this is sounding like a recipe for disaster...
>How do I get into little boats? Like kayaking and canoeing and stuff. I'm into pic related. Learned in last 2 years of high school, then 2 years guiding course, then 10+ years paddling whether paid or recreation.
>What's it take?Persistence. Depends how far you want to push it really.
>How much money does it cost? Gear list below. Spend what you can. Don't skimp on the paddle.
Helmet
Sprayskirt
Drytop/suit depending on climate and season
Boat obviously (Creek and/or play. The "all round" boats just suck at everything.)
Some sort of sandals or kayak shoes. Nothing open toe, you'll smash your toes on rocks.
Throwbag, slings, 'biners, a couple of pulleys, prussiks, rescue PFD, and the knowledge to use them.
>There's a river near me– can I just boat down it Legally I'd be astounded if NO, unless you're in Wales or somewhere shit.
>do I need a license? Nowhere in the world that I'm aware of.
Is it fun?
Fuck yes. But if you get seriously into it, you will lose girlfriends and at least a few friends.
Once you spend most of your time on 4-5+, I'd compare fatalities to wingsuiters. (I've actually discussed this with some. One year there'll be 1 or 2, the next year you may lose 4 close friends in a couple of months)
>How far can I go before I would get in trouble? Not far without some basic (at least) lessons.
You shouldn't paddle alone, 3 minimum (if your mate is in shit, it usually takes 2 people to help them out especially when you're learning)
Not knowing where you live, I can't give any really specific advice...
>can't swimNever paddle anything you're not willing to swim.
That's only relevant up to a point - in tasty stuff it's more a case of "Don't swim or you're flipping a coin".
Start small - like literally a swimming pool - and work your way up.
I'll post a couple of pics of shenanigans - my pics or of me, have probably posted here before at some stage.
