for pickerel I’d recommend a suspending jerkbait , preferably smaller, or a small soft plastic on a jig head jigged close to the bottom or under a float. Key is to fish everything as slow as possible

2 years ago I got in on a spinning combo, enjoyed myself.
This year I got a memecaster and enjoyed myself.
Do I get a fly outfit this year, or is this for poseurs and boomers only? Non-European if that matters.

i dont know man, i fished spinning for years, 15-20 years, just nothing but cast and retrieve spinners and spoons, guess i kind of "woke up" just before the corona shit, bought a ABU promax combo, progressed, got to know a baitcaster .etc
upgraded my rod since to a more "casting" oriented rod, softer, longer etc
but i still have the promax rod for agressive jerkbaits, walk the dog baits and especially frogs

as for going flyfishing as a "next step" idunno man
ive beem a perch/pike fisherman all my life, i personally dont see why i would go to fly fishing

but, i do see the sportsmanship in it. and it is great for trout

if you get into it i would HIGLY recommend you look into Bombarda, especially for sea fishing

I present to you, fine anons of 4chan, the ultimate answer to the question "Should I manually close my bail?"

The Shakespeare 2240 Ball Bearing spinning reel, one of the great granddaddies of all spinning reels. A spinning reel which you might throw in the trash if you are dumb enough to think that you need to close your bail by hand, because you'll fucking break it you dumbfuck Gen Xer.

Also it wasn't that broken, I just had to unbend the bail bar and hook some springs back up and it was good as new.

Spinning reels are designed to close their bails themselves and have been from the invention of the bail bar. If your reel could get hurt from this normal functioning process, it's a shit reel.

GG scrubs.
Ps, if you have a vintage spinning reel like this and you feel resistance closing the bail manually, maybe fucking look and see the steel bar preventing the bail from rotating you dumb ape.

2BH I personally find my enjoyment of fly fishing for trout to not be any greater than my enjoyment of lure fishing for trout, and call me a scrub, but my success rate isn't that different. OTOH, flyfishing for bluegill and bass is 10 times more fun than tossing lures or bait at them.

I've got buddies that swear on fly-fishing streamers for pike, and the one dude is a serious pike angler, who's on 10lb+ fish every weekend, but I haven't committed to buying an 11 or 13 weight myself yet.

Perch (left side)

Spro Urban Hog (55mm, 3 gram cheb)
>this is a simple crayfish lure, pink is one of my favourite lure colours, works well in winter where you'd just slowly bounce them off the bottom, they float so when resting they pop up of the bottom which apparently is attractive to perch.
Rate it 4/5 (it does the job)

Korum Squirmz (50mm, 3 gram cheb)
>these are american senkos remade for british perch fishing. Like the crayfish lure they are slowly bounced off the bottom. I didn't purchase the correct korum ned rig but it seems to work fine with the cheb rig I use on all my soft lures.
Rate it 2/5 (it's action is boring)

Fox Rage Spikey Shad (60mm, 3 gram cheb)
>these are probably one of the most popular british perch lures of all time, there is something about the spiky body that seems to overload the perch lateral line hunting senses and makes them go crazy. I personally am not too impressed with the shad tail design, it often doesn't wiggle when being retrieved through water

Rapala Fat Jack (40mm, 4 grams)
>this is a new 2020 model designed specifically for australian saltwater bream, but I see no reason why it would not work for perch, it is a very deep diving small crankbait which suits my deep rivers, and has plenty of rattle for dirty water, will be trying it for the first time tomorrow, replaced the hooks with small barbless ones that are needle thin and sharp - good for penetrating the bony mouths of perch

BX Jointed Minnow (90mm, 8 gram)
>This is supposed to be rapala's modern reissue of their world famous balsa jointed minnow that is present in every dusty tacklebox in every old attic tacklebox. it's plastic shell but has balsa interior and has an excellent straight retrieve action that you can feel on the rod. I chose a natural green/blue colour that makes a great roach imitation. Someone did a fantastic job designing this, caught me several pike and looks good. Plastic shell absorbs teeth marks without damage. I would like to move the trebles out for single hooks but that seems to mess with the action
4/5 flaw is the high price

Westin Shadteez (75mm, 5 gram jighead)
>one of the best modern shad designs, good all rounder soft lure. The only problem with this lure is the shape of the body makes weedless hooks a no-go and you have to rely on jigheads
3/5 caught me many good pike, comes in lots of pretty colors

MEPPS no.5
>don't need to say anything about mepps, scoured forums searching for the most reccomended mepps design for pike, the consensus seemed to be a large golden blade and a red cotton tail

AFISHLURE Shad (75mm, 6 gram cheb)
>this is cheap chinese shit that I looked at and thought 'that might actually be good' and it has an absolutely fantastic action, the tail goes nuts even when retrieved slowly making it work well in winter, one of my favourite lures for searching and scouting out new areas, works great on the simple straight retrieve

I switched the hooks to singles as I didn't really feel like 2 trebles had a place on such a small lure

Storm wildeye curltail (70mm, 4 gram)
>shads works well in clouded dirty water because they pump out a lot of vibration. Curltails seem to work better in clear water conditions, which I don't often have. This lure's white curl tail gets the pike's attention, and the suprisingly realistic thick soft juicy body gets them biting. The pre-rigged ones come with internal weight as well as hooked, I don't like the hook too much as it stands very proud and I have had trouble with getting a hookup on smaller sized pike

When I used to live in MN I would say the same, but living in a place with almost nothing but trout will warp your sense of what fish are worth fishing for. This lake is all brown trout all the time since it has natural reproduction and no shallow water predators like pike. We joke here about how catching "a couple of browns" is equivalent to getting skunked because it will happen no matter what. Start fishing literally anywhere deeper than 10 feet deep and you will catch brown trout with a few stocked rainbows mixed in. Fish in 40+ FoW and you will catch natural lakers as well. Perch are ironically one of the most sought after fish in the lake for locals (after kokanee) just because anything that isn't a salmonid is rare in this region. The only way to get fish with solid white meat is to catch perch or buy it from the grocery store. Also because although the population of perch is low, the average size is great with plenty of 12+ inch perch mixed in.

Obviously I'm not familiar with your particular lake/reservoir situation, but in my experience perch are a roving fish during early ice. All you can do is pick a likely spot and hope there's some already or wait for them to come in, and if you drill a hole right where they were, you'd better start catching their attention, because if your presentation can't hold them, they'll leave, and you'll be back to waiting.

I couldn't find the pictures from last year's and kinda hoped it would mostly be forgotten. I didn't really use the shrimp lures I got, and have yet to get a pike on the dog cock spoon, but the beads are great on zebra midge, the Krystal flash is great in steelhead flies, and until ilost it the jerk bait worked great.

Do the same thing with steelhead salmon, you can only keep them if thier tagged by the DNR in lake superior but if you catch one from deep water its good as dead anyways so into my boat it goes

Fly fishing is just normal fishing with different gear. If you liked the change in technique from spinning to bait caster, then you will probably enjoy learning how to fly fish. If you have smallmouth near you try them on a fly rod, its some of the most fun you can have.

I only fly fish for pike and musky now. I fished regular gear for my whole life then switched to fly fishing. I've never seen pike chase any lure the way they chase a fly. It's really good fun any you should give it a try if you have the opportunity.

Thanks to you and everyone else who replied. Seems like it would be fun to try at least and I have plenty of spare cash. Probably will go for that TFO Black Label 5wt combo since it seems good value for everything I normally fish, and maybe I'll enjoy this more than spoons for trout.

Depends what you’re fishing for, but most predator freshwater fish don’t care about the scent or taste, they hunt based on vision-vibration-sound. Only upside I really found to the scented stuff like Gulp is sometimes if a fish grabs the tail of a bait and not the hook, it will strike again a second time. With hard baits like spinners and cranks, if you don’t hook them on the first strike, it’s a bit harder to get them to bite again. But that depends on the fish and bait, because even with the scent on a spinner, the fish won’t hit twice when they realize it’s metal.

Anyway, not worth the trouble for bass or panfish or most of the typical game fish.

Basically used hacks to catch this gar.
Had some old Shrimp in my parents freezer took it out to the pier by their house tossed a few hand fulls into the water obviously to Chum the water I've been after this gar for about a year now finally I caught it I released it back alive though.

This would be equivalent to me saying you shouldn't use braid in spinning reels because 2240 reasons. The manually closing the bail or not manually closing the bail question is a manual of arms or principles of operation question, and would be more like me telling you to not coast in neutral or maybe ride your clutch at a stoplight. Anyway, people who claim that you're going to hurt your reel by not manually closing the bail instead of just reeling are still dumb, I've never seen a reel damaged because someone just cranks, whereas I have now seen a reel damaged because someone tried to horse it closed when it's not designed to let you. And since crank to close came first, as a design decision, if some poorly made pile of shit isn't durable enough to accommodate this legacy bail closure method, standard protocols of good design would dictate not including the mechanism to close on crank, in order to prevent the deleterious legacy procedure from being followed.

Now, manually closing the bail might be necessary if your reels get dirty and gross and have too much friction to close themselves when tripped internally, but a little TLC will prevent it, and it's still not caused by cranking to close instead of manually closing.

I have no idea who uses damage to the reel as their primary reason, I do it to prevent wind knots, but to your point I have absolutely seen reels worn out from auto closing. The ramps that trip the closing definitely wear out, especially if there's grit that gets in there. If you're saying you've never seen a reel that just spins and never closes is say you've not spent much time fishing.

I've never had one that just spins without closing that wasn't fixed by cleaning, or that didn't have other problems, or that wasn't a terrible POS.

I've got 20+ year old reels that have been used for hundreds of hours and thousands of fish, some of them $20 cheapies like a Shimano AX500 and some more expensive and nicer, like the Pflueger Supreme 40, and none of the reels I'd recommend have worn out the bail closing mechanism before anything else, that's only happened to me with garbage shit like the included size 500 reels on Celsius ice fishing combos or some of the bad stuff Okuma was selling in the early 2000s.

Clacking Raps are one of my favorite lures too. I stop at small tackle shops a long way from anywhere any time I'm driving by and have the time, because they often have these legacy lures still on the shelf. The tackle shop at Kettle Falls in Voyageurs still had clackin raps in stock as of June.

The Rapala display header that Mills Fleet Farm uses features Clackin Raps extensively and it gets my hopes up every time I see it.

You just kinda know based on hook positioning. I don't really fuck with weighted hooks like that but based on the lures size being 5 inches, I'd suggest a 3/0 or 4/0 since those are the sizes I use for texas rigging 5 inch worms.

Paddle or pedal? I like a kayak rod that's long enough that I can reach the line across the bow or stern if the fish runs under the boat, but if you've got to use a paddle, you need a rod you can comfortably stow.

no rocks, it's a sandy sheltered bay near the coast and only the jetty pilings. there's some old wood on the sea floor near the foot of the jetty I guess from construction

Last run of cohos and kings just came through here. Another 3 weeks probably until chromers start showing up in the creeks, depending on the weather. Hopefully it's cool enough that the water is chilled but warm enough that i can still get out there...

Hate these lulls in between runs when it's too cold to target bass or anything else. I suppose there might be pike and perch hitting.

What's the best way to rig tip-ups for pike?
I am thinking quick strike rigs side-by-side (left). Or should I do inline (right?).
Or just a single hook? Treble or normal hook?
I am going to use fluoro because wire sucks.

The beads and spinners are there mostly because of anti-snagging regs. Many states frown on bare treble rigs.

I have a quickstrike on one and just a monster circle hook on another. The quickstrike has better success when the pike are feeding aggressively and the circle hook has more success when they are feeding less aggressively.

But while the difference isn't that great most of the time, when the bite gets tricky, the circle hook rig really shines.

Different things work at different times, and basically all of it works at least a little. The quick strike rig very rarely loses a fish, but when they are being picky, they'll avoid it more than they do the circle hook rig. With a single circle hook rig, if they smack it and hold, there's a risk that the hook won't be in their mouth when you go to set it.

Went Pflueger Supreme over Shimano NASCI for my St. Croix Triumph 7'3" ML spinning rod. I obviously haven't used it yet, due to it being hardwater season, but so farm I'm very impressed with the smoothness of the drag and lightness of the reel. The smoothness is every bit comparable to the NASCI at the tackle shop and the Supreme is 2 oz lighter than the comparably sized NASCI.

We'll see how she handles fish next year, but by initial impressions, this is the best reel I own now.

Most tackle shops sell these tabs that you heat with a lighter then dump in a regular bucket and it releases air bubbles for a while.
You could also bring a scoop to do water swaps and occasionally pull out old, unoxygenated water and replace it with water from the ice hole

Obviously if you're comparing it to a 6cm lead jig it won't cast at all by comparison, but if you're comparing ~5 gram floating crankbaits, it should cast well by comparison.

I'm honestly thinking that this is way better than a GoPro in many ways granted you have access you it remotely or able to use voice control but battery life, and the fact it records in night vision unlike a GoPro where you'd have to go into the GoPro and manually change the settings to try and get it to work at night.
I mean a body cam can still be used on your head using a head band and just use the clip to clip on the head band but I'll let you know when I get it. You can buy mods for the GoPro but fishing with white like on is likely gonna spook fish.

I also do ubereats so it's good to have in case I have any problems.

Is fishing for trout in small-ish rivers good when it’s cold out? River near me is probably around 7ft deep at deepest spot and ~4ft at shallowest spot. Usually go there in the summer and catch pumpkin seeds, cutthroat trout and pike minnows but not sure how it will be now that’s it’s ~3°C (37°f)

The flatt shads cast like a MFer as well, but most lipless cranks are pretty heavy and go the distance. Can’t remember the weight on them, but the smaller guys (50mm?) launch real far on 10lb-15lb braid.

Some sport fishermen illegally stocked pike in a lake a friend brought me to. A couple months ago he was with his dad, and had a pike that ate his trout get away. Testing out my new Penn surfblaster 3, what a beautiful reel! So smooth!

Also testing out reversing my hand positions on my longer, stiffer rods and having the reel down low, it's takes a bit of getting used to but allows for much more action in the stiffer, lower part of the blank. I need to get a casting cannon as even with a finger stall, it's ripping my fingertip to shreds.

When it’s been below freezing for a couple night the fishing really slows down. Trout also tend to move to deeper pools with slower water so some of the spots you catch them in during the spring might be empty now. I still go out whenever I can but you have to expect you won’t catch anything. Still a fun time though and sometimes you get a good day where you figure out what the fish are eating and where they are holding and catch a bunch.

They are sluggish as fuck through the ice. A plain hook or teardrop jig held still or barely twitched just off the bottom is your best bet but it will be tough no matter what. Try worms, corn, or waxworms and if it's legal in your area try chumming with the same bait you are using. Also, don't use your panfish gear with 2 pound line. They are slower than they are in the summer, but they will still run like a freight train if you have too light of gear.

Skid, I have my eye on the 2wt Cabelas CGR II fly rod for pond bluegill, since that is all that can be caught somewhat consistently in this shithole called Toronto. I recall you being rather enthusiastic about your CGR rods back in the day, would you still recommend it? I have some reservations because I’ve never used a fly rod that short before.
I plan to overline it with Scientific Anglers Mastery Trout WF3F line I have lying around.

Rod is ok but I dislike slow action rods. I only use it on the tiniest streams for brook trout and even then I’m thinking about getting a fast action 1 or 2 wt. The 2 wt cgr is more of a toy than a fishing tool.

It’s interesting you say that, while I was doing my research I found a lot of posts on a glass fly rod forum that recommend overlining it one weight up. Guess I’ll have to spend more money buying new fly line.

Went up to Jack's Lake yesterday and found a bit of ice, caught some baby pike. Hopefully more is accessible towards the end of January

My main ice fishing lake blew back open in a storm on the 23rd (60mph gusts), so it's got 10-14 in the bay by the lake access and 3-5 on the main lake. I'm betting someone puts a truck through this year.

Perch are biting though, and I saw walleye on the cam this afternoon, but couldn't get them to bite. Think I might start staying out late next week.

If you want something truly waterproof then you may have to look at one of those fly fishing backpacks made by SIMMS, Patagonia, FishPond, or Orvis. They can get very expensive, just to warn you.
Otherwise you may just have to constantly apply DWR on a regular backpack, but it won't be 100% waterproof.

Most hiking fags cover their backpacks in trashbag because light weight, durable, and waterproof are all design features that don't agree with each other. Pick something with gortex and good zipper tapes and accept that it can't be immersed or that it will wet out if water pools on it, or accept heavier weight and get one of those plasticized fabric bags with those rubberized cooler zippers from Guide Gear or some such.

If you're just looking to go down to the local lake and wander around the shallows and catch pan fish during the summer its fine. I use it for that with my kids when we go swimming and we have a lot of fun catching panfish.

For trout fishing it's garbage. Short rod makes it impossible to get good drifts in technical water because you can't pick up enough line or mend efficiently. Also has a bad hook set when using nymphing with a dry dropper.

I understand what you mean. The Cabelas CGR 2wt will not be for trout fishing. I live over an hour's drive away from trout headwaters and when I do go there maybe once or twice a season I use my 7'6" 3wt Echo Carbon-XL.
I intend to use the 2wt CGR as a rod that I can throw in my bag and carry with me on my bicycle for summertime panfish. That's about all I can catch consistently around Toronto so I figured I should get the most fun out of it by using a 2wt fiberglass rod that bends even with the smallest bluegill. If I'm lucky I might catch some fingerling bass.

The other fish we call Roofblei i think the English name would be Ade. Great sports fish, can fight like hell.

Also the Dutch and English language wikipedia pages don't agree on which binomial name is the most correct and which is the outdated synonym, which is always nice.

I just started a thread but I figured I'd post here too. What do you guys think about fly casting for bass? I have a lot of experience bass fishing, I've fly fished for rainbows a bunch, but never for bass.

Fly fishing is strangely addictive. I highly recommend you try it.
Bass on the fly is only best in the early season before the waters get too weedy. If you have a boat and waders with access to prime waters then you will have a much easier time catching bass on the fly.
Stripping streamers and poppers are fun ways to catch bass. You may want to look into sinking/intermediate lines or sinking polyleaders to get your streamers down to where the bass are during the hot summer months.

Leuciscus aspius should be correct. Generally, it is very complicated with cyprinids and many species are closely related. Therefore, Aspius as a genus was dropped as it would wreck the Leuciscus genus.

Had a wonderful session down at Grays today, the Thames was like a mill pond and the air was crist.

Not a huge amount of game, just a few whiting, a good sized pouting and amazingly, a tiny little Codling which was unexpected, thing was barely bigger than my hand.

It was so nice I ended up staying for 5 hours, no photos through as I left my phone in the car and couldn't be bothered to walk back.

My grandfather and uncles got some nice lake trout mounted in our hunting camp. I have no idea of the cost, but the fish have held up well over 40 years and they made a great decoration. Whatever they paid was a worthwhile investment and is usually the first thing people flock to when they visit our camp.

What fly rods do you already have? I use my 6 wt indicator rod to fish for smallmouth and sometimes largemouth depending on the vegetation. To me the 6 wt is a great rod you can fish indicator rigs and streamers to trout and also fish for bass or panfish so I'd recommend that if you don't already have one.
I do pull out the 8 wt when I'm specifically going for largemouth in a very weedy lake because it has more lifting power than a 6.

I like to use the 2 wt when I'm wading during the summer and they are all close to shore on a nest. When I'm float tubing I usually bring my 6 wt because I usually will catch a mix bag of panfish and bass. A big bluegill is still a pretty good fight on a 6 wt.

Very fun and effective, its what I spend most of my spring/summer doing if I'm not fishing for esox. Small fish = 4-6wt, Big fish/heavy cover/lots of current = 7 or 8wt. A 7wt is a safe bet regardless of conditions or fish size. I mostly fish streamers on an 8wt but in june I break out the 5wt and use damsel/dragon fly patterns which caught me 2 of my 3 biggest fish this year.

Should I get an 8wt setup and fly fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass? I don’t own a boat nor do I have regular access to one. 100% of my fishing is done from urban shores other than the very rare occasion where I manage to rent a canoe on a lake up north for a few hours (maybe once a season).
As far as my area is concerned it seems that doing fly fishing from shore is not very practical since there’s never enough room to back cast. In fact now that I think about it, almost all my fishing spots won’t have enough room to cast a fly rod properly without hitting something or someone.
Should I just stick to my baitcasters for bass?

Any recommendations for an ultra large arbor fly reel for a 2-3wt rod?
I would love something like the Sage Click reel but unfortunately that’s out of my budget for a panfish setup. I’m in Canada if that matters.

It wont be as practical as conventional but you have a few options. Single handed spey lines on a standard 9ft 8wt will let you cast a good distance with no back casts but you might have to wade out a few feet. Another option is a shorter fly rod (approx. 7'11" - 8'4") and heavy lines like rio pike/musky. With this kind of set up a single back cast is enough to reach 60ft but you need around 15ft behind you, maybe a bit less with a stripping basket. Or you can just go full on switch rod.

Chuck texas rigs into heavy cover like weed beds, preferably into small open areas. Let them sink onto the bottom and let them sit like 10 seconds, watching your line for any movement. If nothing grabs it, reel in the slack line feeling for a fish on the end, then just bounce it across the bottom on the way back in. You detect bites by feel or by seeing the line get dragged out if it's not windy.

I did some research and found OPST skagit. From the videos on YouTube it looked like a good solution to roll cast from shore with zero room to back cast but when I went to talk to my local fly shop they didn’t seem very enthusiastic about it being the right solution for me despite selling OPST Skagit products and other brands of skagit lines.
If I do want to try catching other fish besides bass such as carp on my 8wt setup then I assume skagit wouldn’t be a good idea?

For the most part skagit is for swinging streamers or nymphs in current. It's definitely not ideal for accurate casting to fish, lighter presentations, or still water. Regular lines are much better for that. I'm not going to say you cant catch carp on it but it wont be easy.

I didn't land that one, but I've caught pounders there before. I think it mostly happened because I couldn't react to him fast enough and I had a firm hold of the line, so the drag couldn't save the rod.

I got warranty on the rod, but they were out of the 6wt and I upgraded to the 7wt at the time.

Something that cheap probably won’t be that good and if you plan to get serious about fly fishing you’d still end up having to spend more money again in the near future. The poor man buys twice so buy once and cry once.
Personally I’d recommend that you find a legit fly shop in your area, go in and get outfitted based on the types of fish you plan to catch. It’s going to cost you significantly more but you will be getting a proper setup that will last you for years if not more. And building a relationship with a local fly shop is always beneficial for you in the long run.
If cost is a huge constraint for you then I guess the cheap setup off Amazon will get you out on the water sooner rather than later.

Ah I see why now. I don’t fish rivers that often. Almost all my fishing are done in stillwater ponds and lakes. But I did see some videos of people using skagit for trout in lakes and it looked pretty convincing...

The largest problem with cheapo setups is the line more often than not. Cheap line oftentimes floats like shit and doesn't cast nearly as well as the decent stuff. Swap it out for a mid priced line (Scientific Anglers and Rio are pretty much always at least decent) and you should be golden. Don't cheap out on the line, it's just as important if not more important than a good rod. Reels barely matter beyond being a line holder for most trout or panfish fly fishing, and a cheap rod will probably be good enough to learn the basics. One thing to note is that the rod you linked is slow action, which means it has a limited casting range compared to other actions. That's fine for smaller rivers or panfish fishing, but if you are fishing large rivers it will definitely be worth finding at least a medium action rod.
