>>1962148If you're in New York, Eastern Mountain Sports runs an outdoor school that teaches rock climbing, ice climbing and accelerated mountaineering. It's expensive, but they will kit you out with everything you need. And if you can get two or three friends to sign up with you it gets much cheaper per person.
A less formal option would be to join a climbing gym/club and make friends with someone that will teach you in their off time.
Money is always going to be an issue, though. Technical mountaineering is not a poor man's hobby
