Kimberley is closest, and I like the feel of the Bavarian type town better than Fernie. It is also cheaper.
There are others just west like Red and WW but if you're driving there you might as well just stop in Idaho.
Going north, Panorama is nothing to write home about. It was so icy there the fucking hill was blue. Destroyed my titanium edges.
If I were going further north than Fernie, I would go straight to Revelstoke. Forget Banff, forget LL, those are for retarded tourists who think they are having a life-changing revelation in the mountains amongst 80 asian tourists next to them. You do not understand the meaning of busy until you go there.
You have to stop at kicking horse before Revelstoke though.
