Anyone here still prospect for gold? I'm in California and found this gravel bank with this really sticky, clumpy clay/gravel mix that has gold in it and have already gotten 2 grams out of this hole. But it's really hard to process the clay by hand, any advice on how to do this better?

Right now I'm just using a simple bucket classifier with chicken wire to filter out the larger rocks, but the clay sticks on the larger rocks so much that I have to be thorough about it. I've already found little flakes stuck in rocks that I didn't wash properly enough so gold can get thrown out if I'm not careful.

This area is a gravel bar bend of a small creek that has some huge boulders up to 20 feet above the creek, the reason why I chose to dug here since it's a sign that no one else dug here before and there must've been a huge flood a long time ago that carried all these boulders here.

There's a lot of black sand in here but more important some really big gold flakes, some enough to be pickers. It's driving me nuts too because I know I'm not even close to the bedrock yet but the gold pieces are already this big.

Some nice pickers I got in my last trip, the gold gets bigger the deeper I dig but the hole keeps flooding with water too the more I dig. The whole creek floods with water in spring when the snow from the mountains melt and floods it but from summer until December it's almost empty of water.

Why don't you build a small sluice and use rocks to set it up in that river. Will really save you a lot of effort washing that clay

the hole water level looks higher than the dropped river level next to it?
you could maybe get a siphon to suck the water out to the lower river level, then it'll siphon out while you are free to work

Gold likes to travel down as deep as it can go before it hits something impermeable. Whats the consistency of the clay your dealing with? If you have time consider building a rocker box, it will break down the clay easier and allow you to work more material than just by panning. Fantastic course gold mate keep at it, keep going deeper til you hit bedrock. Dont forget to clean every last crack out as deep as you can go, big gold will be waiting down there.

if you do it right without dumping the tailings in a river, hydraulic mining makes perfect sense and doesnt do much serious harm that cant be undone with tree planting. The only reason it was banned back in the day in california was because it made a huge mess for ranchers and fishermen. If you do it properly with a settling pond and an excavator scooping out your sediment it works great. Also see above pic, ground sluicing works great for the small scale miner.

ok, it's called "puddling"

you can dump the clay in a yard pool with water and then walk all over it until it breaks up. That's the traditional method of puddling.

the modern method is toss a few pounds in a cement mixer with some large rocks and a bunch of water and mix it until the clay is mud.

also double check please but if you dont need a claim for a stream sluice in California (i havent checked in a while), set up one of these, a wing dam sluice. It works wonders but needs high water flow to work properly. Only do this though if you know there are no fish in the stream your working next to.

if you hand mine the smart way, you wont disturb the river or stream banks at all. You mine one section, placing your rocks in hand piles. These build up the longer you have worked in a spot, and as you work your way down stream the rocks create an armor that slows down bank erosion.

A group of guys digging a hole by hand in their free time is a lot different than someone denuding a river valley with a giant or ground sluicing.
