Just like literally every piece of gear out there, they’re not for everyone and they’re not perfect for every situation, but umbrellas are totally under appreciated, as barely anyone tries them.
They’re great in the SW, where it’s super sunny and there’s less shade, and just as great in any hikes involving long road walks for the same reason. Perfect for a lot of the Southern summer rain as well, where scattered showers don’t bring much wind and temps remain too high for a jacket or poncho.
Wind is the big downfall. Not only will it blow rain right onto you (just like with any umbrella, so we all know how much is a tolerable amount of wind), it causes the umbrella to act like a sail. But this really isn’t that big of a deal, unless it’s super windy. Also not compatible with trekking poles, though they can be rigged to a shoulder strap (but wind becomes even more of an issue, and it’s not ideal). Overgrown trails aren’t as big of a problem as you might think.
