I moved to west Texas and I know there are Rattlesnakes. My pest control guy said that they can kill a person.

I have heard others say that it’s not that big a deal. I live in a rural area and I’m by myself most of the time.

Would I be able to drive myself to the hospital?

All you need to know is be careful when rolling logs,lifting rocks, or moving any junk, espescially tin from around the crib. They're generally fairly docile unless threatened and will casually slither away from you.

If bit, I'd call the ambo, chances are the venom won't kill you, but some people have worse reactions and the ambo can get you an airlift to antivenom valley.

I got bit by a baby one but it was a best case scenario of a light bite on my ankle with little venom, still hurt like a bitch and messed up my foot for a few days though

Yeah, usually if you're just hiking they'll know you're there before you know they're there. When it's warm, watch where you step/climb in case you find one asleep. If you hear rattling, back away slowly. Always bring a long stick and good boots.

They CAN kill you, but most won't because adults save their venom for prey (and your big ass is not prey). Juveniles are often more dangerous, because they haven't figured out how to control their venom output.

Also, they control your local rodent population, if you start wiping them out, look forward to shit tons of rats everywhere.

Also Also, some rattlers suffer from a birth defect that causes them to be born rattle-less. Usually they die faster in the wild (because they can't scare shit away) but people who hunt rattlers create an artificial selection scenario where silent rattlers become more common.

TL;DR don't fuck with snakes or snake habitats and they won't fuck with you.

ive lived and worked in parks in trans-pecos west texas and in my experience the only people who ever got bit by rattlesnakes deserved it. you have to go out of your way to annoy one that much, or not know what you are doing offtrail and get unlucky

Pretty much this.
Rattlesnakes are very docile and 99.9% of the time they just want to be left alone.
You could step on one and it probably wouldn't bite you.
But water moccasins are another story.
They're dicks and will chase you.

People used to kill them whenever they saw them, and some people still do on their own property, but that's counterproductive. Rattlesnakes make it easy to find them because it helps people avoid conflict that isn't beneficial for either party, killing all the ones you see because they warn you they're there just creates selective pressure against rattling so you're promoting the evolution of a snake you're more likely to step on by accident.

Don't blame you. Last thing I want to be doing is spreading misinformation about something life threatening.

I'm a remote hiking guide so knowing this is a necessity. I've done my snake removal course on top of learning how to treat bites. It does work and is sadly not widely known by the general public. We have 21 of the top 25 deadliest snakes in the world, this shit should be taught in schools.

There is actually a gene for "rattleless" rattlesnakes.
Normally these snakes don't live as long and produce in numbers anywhere near those with rattles since rattlesnakes are kind of pussies and they rely on the rattle to make danger go away.
But since people have been killing rattlers that they can find (hear) the rattleless snakes are becoming much more common. About 1/4 of the timber rattlers I've found in the last 6 years have been rattleless.

Rattlesnakes are pretty chill if you don't chase them around with a shovel. They just want to sunbathe and eliminate the rodent problem you never knew you had

After you live or work there for a year you will figure it out
