Did you grow up with the ocean? Like did you visit it regularly or at least for a week or so a year? I think that makes a giant difference in how afraid people are of it. I associate it with happy childhood memories, I'm sure that helps.
It's not like your boat is on acid, if it were to sink your body still floats with close to 0 effort. Even in violent waves, unless its a storm the waves at the coasts tend to have a rythm. Take a breath between waves, and dive below them. If they didn't foam yet, you can jump them. If neither is an option, they will throw you around a bit. Hold your breath, you will loose orientation but your body buoyancy will bring you to the surface again.
