If I had the money to travel somewhere, the 80 bucks or whatever I'd spend on a tarp, paracord, sleeping pad, blanket and backpack, could easily pay for a few nights inside a cheap hostel. For repeat travels, yes, you would start saving money, but international plane tickets are still 100's of dollars.
If you want to do it because you enjoy "sticking it to the man" or just feeling like an outcast, I'm not going to tell you otherwise. Don't litter, don't vandalize.
