These are dipped in wax, so I grant you they ARE a bit harder to light.
Rather than a regular match where you do a long strike almost in line with the box, these are best lit with a short sharp strike, sometimes 2 at something more towards 45deg.
Also, you can hold one finger almost right on top of the head of the match to help stop it from breaking - as you can attest, these things don't exactly flare up suddenly.
Alternatively, you can rub it a few times on the striker to get rid of the wax to make it strike more easily.
If you do this, use one side for scraping wax, the other side for striking - it builds up on the box.
