If I was to carry a pistol while out (which I don't) I would probably carry it in a chest pouch or rig of some sort.

Day hike I just carry it like normal, AIWB since I am also more likely to encounter people. With a pack on you're really stuck with either chest or drop leg. I personally just slapped a Safariland QLS adapter on the pack belt and called it good, take it off my range belt and pop it on there. If I have a larger pack that more often means that I am not going to see anyone who cares about a pistol. Out of state all bets are off depending on their laws.
