well either way you're living in a very small space. To me the idea of this is a reliable shelter to sleep in and be mobile. ideally spending the daylight hours out of the vehicle.

I live out of a 34ft travel trailer while I'm building my permanent home. I prefer it to a bus or RV because your means of moving is separate from your living space. If my truck acts up I can have it towed or limp it somewhere if the damage isn't too bad. If 8 was living out of a bus and something went wrong mechanically I better know where I'm staying for however long it will take a diesel mechanic to handle it, on top of them potentially stealing my shit as my entirely livelihood goes to the mechanic too.

Cost wise I think I'm doing okay, but I could surely cut down on a lot of my expenses if I weren't trying to save for building supplies. Fuck covid if only for raping lumber prices.

Shit breaks, you need parts, tools, and knowledge.

Parking will be annoying, get a bike for secondary transport

Insulation is hard to do, but solar panels on roof will help.

I'd recomend a regular rv, I know its not alot of room, but the wiring and water storage are there, and otherwise its gonna be real expensive to hook that shit up into a bus

I think a bus still counts as "on shore".

I spent 2 weeks in a converted bus while on site for a job. Someone one of the bosses knew lent it to "save money" which I'm almost sure it didnt.
Observations:
-even as a 5'9" manlet, i could only truly stand up in the center isle. I had about 2 inches of clearance which diminished greatly when wearing boots. The taller guys spent the whole time crooked and bent over.
-I wore shoes inside because it was spring in the pnw (30-40 f). Having clearance under the vehicle and a metal floor made the floor very cold, even with the wood stove and heater going.
-there were some attempts made to insulate, but the 4 walls of windows (and I suspect the ceiling escape hatch) made it almost impossible to keep heated.
- the layout is kinda awkward. Two people was mostly fine but its alot like living in a hallway.
- I dont know if this was particular to the place or conversation I stayed in, or is a problem with all converted vehicles, but the vermin found the bus immediately. Mice and rats mostly, though I suspect a squirrel of some kind as well.
- The rain was incredibly loud on the metal roof. This is coming from someone with pretty severe Eeeeeeee.
-the air circulation was pretty poor. Damp when cold and muggy when the stove was lit. the whole thing would fog up and condensation would streak the walls if it rained or more than 3 people were inside. This is a solvable issue of course, but all of the built in mechanisms to prevent this only operate when the engine is on.
- getting it on site was apparently a hassle, and one of the split rims ended up needing to be worked on. They called a specialist out to our buttfuck nowhere site because they are allegedly called "widowmakers" for a reason.

All told it was cool for the novelty but for our applications we immediately went back to trailers.

I don't really see the point of it.
I suppose nomadic lifestyle is great (and necessary) in extreme biomes (desert, artic) but at most latitudes I'd rather build a cabin and live near nature instead of travelling from city to city

Have a buddy who was almost killed by a split rim.

It basically eviscerated him and took a huge chunk out of his shoulder...just inches from taking his head off instead.

He was airlifted and made it because he is a badass. But man was he fucked up for awhile...

I spent my senior year of high school converting a school bus into an rv with scrap materials. Structurally, school buses are far superior to RVs, but are poorly insulated. It is also important to bear in mind that many school buses are geared for slow speed in flat environments. Cross country interstate travel becomes extremely difficult when your running a V8 flat out just to maintain speed. That being said, the sturdy build quality of buses and their ubiquity makes them viable for many other applications.
