Advice for beekeeping in suburban area?

Planning to start 2 hives in my backyard this spring. Any advice?

Already taking a beekeeping course at my college alongside it. Also need to convince my mommy to let me put bees in the backyard.

My neighbor's wife was complaining that my bees were drinking from her fountain. I asked if they "knew for sure if they were my bees." She threatened to spray them, I informed her that it is a crime in my state to spray honeybees, because it fucking is. However you need to be responsible with bees. They are like other livestock and they get diseases and beehives can attract other parasitic insects like mites, hive beetles, hive moths so you need to be inspecting those hives weekly. Join the local bee keeping club. Get a experienced beekeeper to help you. It's not always easy but very rewarding. And no top bar. That's not easy for a beginner.

The hive should be kept on the east side of the building where it can get the most sunlight in the morning. Bees hate the smell of cut grass, so don't get into the hive after mowing the lawn. Beekeeping is surprisingly low maintenance, you just need to get in the hive every few weeks and know what you are looking for.

Thanks man. As far as bees, I'm planning on starting 2 hives with 2 nucs. People say online it's much easier this way and you get honey in the first season. You think there's a reason to go with boxes instead of nucs if the money isn't an issue?

If it is your first time, then nuc would be the best route, but I don't think it matters that much. If you want to be hardcore you could do a box and then go out and find a colony that has started in someone's attic and use those bees. My mom used to get free bees that way.

that was the most ridiculous one i've heard but i have heard of other legal issues. one guy had to get rid of his bees after a no livestock ordance was changed to include bees, due to neighbors complaining. i heard another about a keeper who got cited for noise ordance violations, because of the buzzing. i forget how that worked out. another guy almost faced criminal charges because a neighbor was allergic to bees and accused the keeper of trying to kill him.

bees are neat animals and free honey by the pound is awesome but always check local laws and talk to your neighbors first. it can save you alot of trouble especially if you live in the 'burbs or otherwise close to other people.

Never thought I'd say thank God I'm in NJ.

Our bee laws actually seem rather reasonable. All local ordinances are invalidated by the state, which only mandates you take a bee keeping course, you register your hive, 10 feet from the property line, and no more than 2 hives per quarter acre.

do you need to "reseed" your hive every year? i live in the rainy pnw and i don't think there are any honeybees native to my area, do they die off in the winter or do they hibernate? usda zone 8a, if it makes a difference. i'd love to start beekeeping too but i don't want to have to buy a new colony every year

I've no idea about reseeding because I live in a very warm and tropical environment year round. However I do know that during winter bees both hibernate and die off, they form a ball around the queen in the hive to keep her protected and warm and they slowly move through all of the honey and eat it. Many of these bees will die.

cody's lab has a nice youtube playlist about taking care of bees. essentially everything he does in a year. in the winter most of the bees die, but some survive. in 8a you should be fine.

if plants can get pollinated in your area, bees should be fine there.

I've never kept bees but I do plan to once I get some of my pasture restored and I was originally thinking of getting a flow hive, but that article makes a lot of sense, especially in the argument for the bees making their own combs due to how 'in tune' they are with the wax and how it could potentially make a bunch of misinformed people with good intent.

When you think of honey the same way you think of the commercialized meat industry, it put into perspective how the convenience of the flowhive could basically just churn out a bunch of ignorant consumers who are doing it with good intentions, but don't have the respect for the bees due to just 'turn crank recieve honey'. You stop throwing away your last few bites of burger and fries when you spend three years raising the beef and your potatoes turned to mush because of a lot of rain one year.

i thought it was just a silly gimmick until i saw the price tag. a 6 frame flowhive is just short of $800, which is criminal when you consider that you can get a normal langstroth online for a third or fourth of that. you could buy a fully assembled painted 2-deep 2-super 10-frame hive, an electric 4 frame honey extractor, and the bee package with that money, and still have some left over. obviously the price difference only gets worse with more hives. maybe if someone has a back like a pretzel and cant lift anything, and wants to own a single beehive, then it would be worth it to them. even then you can get chinese knockoffs of the frames and not spend $400 extra

I'm a professional beekeeper. Do not buy a flow hive or any other expensive all in one hive. You need to get used to opening your hive and pulling the frames out, looking for disease, moving queens, breeding new queens, cleaning, etc etc and you cant replace bits of a flow hive easily.

It isnt hard and it's very rewarding. You will need to learn about plants, you need to know what flowers when, what temp is required to yield (just because something flowers doesnt mean it's yielding) and etc etc. Certain plants actually annoy the bees, some of the flowers will slightly close as the bee enters it which causes it to hit the bee and if you have a whole hive all collecting from those flowers the bees will be annoyed when you open the hive. The first 6-12 months you are learning the bees the next 4 years you are learning the plants.

So that's actually one thing I was wondering about.

I live in suburban NJ, so the flowers they'll use are mostly gonna be peoples gardens or local parks. Is there anything I could even do as far as the plants? Would it make a difference if I had a small garden in my backyard? What if the flowers they find are no good? Could the honey taste bad?
