Not him, and 4 hours isn’t very far, but I’ve gone 9+ to GSMNP. There weren’t any car camping sites available, and driving 9 hours then hiking 10 miles isn’t really all that great. I’ve also done hikes where I sleep at the trailhead but get a hotel for the drive home. It’s nice to have a bed, and a shower, and wake up refreshed for a long drive or flight home.
