You cant. Best bet is landing a land management job somewhere like Alaska. Look on usajobs for forest service, fish n willdlife, etc. You spend a lot of time off grid. This is a good way to get accustomed to the lifestyle. GS-3 Laborer positions take high school grads and offer housing included.

Right now I'm a work-at-home programmer, but I've been doing a lot of investing over many years with the goal of living off of the throw-off.

My advice would be to start investing heavily to build up a passive income stream and that can be your spending money.

I've been working in the field for a long while, so not long. Back in the earlier days, work at home was only for very trusted senior people, that's completely changed. But with corona, I think most jobs would be pretty much remote, so it'll be way easier now.

I’ve done it. Worked as a logger and sivilculture contractor also did some moose hunt guide services. Lived in a cabin with no power and an old fashioned outhouse for 18 months. Would drive the hour into town once or twice a week grab a shower and some laundry. Saved some money and built a place in town. Still have cabin will probably eventually sell place in town and move out there again full time. Should be able to improve solar system hopefully this summer. Proper well shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Septic system should be easy too friend has 5 excavators and does them on the regular.
To live off grid one needs a lot of different skills and abilities. Self sufficiency isn’t easy but it’s worth the rewards.
Y’all go to the pub or coffee shop after work. I swing by a fishing hole or deer blind

Being a backcountry guide is a good option. In my early 20s I spent a couple years doing this.

I worked with a few guides who have lived this lifestyle most of the adult lives and don't plan on stopping until retirement. The owned their own properties, built their own cabins, and made extra money through side hustles.

One Plows snow. Many insurance companies require people to keep lanes clear in the winter months. Most people don't want to drive 2+ hours to remote properties to do this.

Another owned a small front end loader and a hydraulic log splitter. He had a great reputation and he was always in high demand.

Honestly that's one job where even if they did deploy, they'd most likely be doing the exact same job they had stateside, and it'd be about the same level of risk. It's hard to justify having a fire department on anything other than the larger FOBs. I don't say that to diminish the job; firefighting is hard living even in civilian departments, and retarded soldiers on post only make it more challenging.
