Where are you supposed to place your campfire in relation to your tent/tarp? Also, are pic related any good for cooking simple things like water, coffee and soup and then to eat out of it?

I have the Austrian version of that mess kit, with the pot, frying pan, and bowl. It's fucking fantastic. I keep an Esbit stove, a pack of solid fuel tablets, a couple squeeze pouches of mil-surp fire gel for when my firewood is really wet, storm matches, MRE toilet paper, etc. inside the mess kit.

Versatile, lightweight, and I can boil water for coffee, make a big pot of stew/chili for myself and one or two other people, all kinds of things with it. I've even baked in it, though it's really tricky not to burn the bottom of your bread/corn bread when you bake over a fire in the woods.

Those are retarded and impractical and made to only fit the standard issue backpack of an army of 1 specific country. Why would you look at it and think "this looks like a good thing to buy instead of a pot that could fit my gas canister or a large cup that could fit my Nalgene"?
You won't balance this thing on most stoves and you'll grow out of cooking on campfires after the second time you have to wash or pack sooty pots.

I have a random chink brand titanium 1100ml pot. It has a lid, bail handle and the usual handles on the side. Works great. It is very light, fits my gas canister and stove inside, and I can boil enough water in one go for a tea and some Rolltons. I was a bit sceptical about buying a random chink pot at first, but in the end I'm pretty happy that I didn't spend pretty much more then double that for a brand product, since those pots are probably made in the same factory anyway. If you want to go cheaper, just go with a stainless steel one instead

Upwind, so that you don't smoke out your tent. The campfire should be far enough from your tent so that random sparks from the fire don't get blown into it and burn small holes. However, you should try to find a sheltered spot in the first place, so that the wind doesn't blow your stuff around all night.

It's a good basic set that can be used on both low heat output stoves like a military hexi/trioxane/alcohol burner or over an open fire. Just takes a little practice to be able to drink from it without burning your lip.

then if we continue the purity spiral, chromium is poisonous so stainless steel is verboten. also anything teflon-coated, but smart people already knew that.

the point is that all hot metal will leach toxins because all metal is toxic is high quantities. you need to chronically consume about 1.3 mg/L of elemental copper before you get poisoned.
