I'm planning to go hiking at a state park in the snow this weekend, for the first time.
(First time in the snow or cold weather, not hiking...)

I don't know how much snow is on the ground, or if there is even any at all. It'll be around 40F at ground level, but I don't know about at higher altitudes.

I'm only planning on a day thing... 8-10 hours total.

What do I need to know to not fuck this up?

Wear layers and get ready to strip down. Bring a pack to put your jacket in. At 40F it's going to be warm as fuck after you've been trudging through the snow. Bring plenty of water. If you know how to use a compass, bring it. Have fun.

- Dress in layers so you can adjust as you go. Almost more important than not getting too cold is not getting too hot, because you don't want your sweat to freeze. And be sure to stop and adjust as needed

- Pay special attention to your fingers / toes / ears to make sure they're warm enough

- Bring enough water, and try to bring some in an insulated bottle to keep it from freezing. This is less of a concern for day hikes, but still something to be careful of

- If the snow is packed down, you'll want microspikes, if it's loose, you'll want snowshoes. I'm not really sure how you'll know ahead of time other than checking hiking reports.

- Bringing a thermos of warm food can be really nice

Winter hiking is not bad at all, and generally just a blast. Have fun anon, and be sure to take some pics to share with us

So that you can navigate safely. People get disoriented and lost in the smallest amount of snow and vegetation. It may sound stupid to you, but if you look at some of the SAR cases in your area, I guarantee there are people that got lost a hundred feet from the trail. To add onto what >>1971373 said, if the trail is already torn up, don't even bother with your snowshoes.

Thank you. I think my socks and boots are good for my toes, and I have a nice pair of cold-weather running gloves that work really well. I'm a little concerned about my ears, but I have some hats.

As for the snow, it shouldn't be too bad at lower altitudes, since we've been kind of bouncing above and below freezing the past few weeks. If there's any higher up, it will likely be slushy. I don't mind getting disgusting though.

Haven't decided on a plan for food yet...

You don't need a compass. Get alltrails pro app and download the relevant offline maps ahead of time. Bring a backup charger for your phone.

If you're going to wear crampons, you need to wear climbing boots. If you're going to wear climbing boots and crampons, you should be using an ice axe, you should have basic self arrest skills and basic climbing knowledge. If you're like OP and you simply want to hike in the snow... wear microspikes.

I solo a lot in state and federal parks. Often just for the day. Sometimes there is no mobile at these locations. I take a windshell, a fleece vest and water to be out overnight 30-50F°, a map in a waterproof bag, compass, a headlamp, and some trailmix or powerbar, but the food isn't necessary. I wear boots for conditions and a hat. Gloves, mayby just those thin I pack some 1" webbing, snaplinks, a fishing knife, duct tape, a blindfold, maple syrup. Don't forget alligator clips. Some fellas like to get a veterinarian surgical kit from Alibaba but I just take a deer hunter's bone saw. You can get a riding crop or cattle prod at Tractor Supply. A full size shovel might be handy, you can't be too prepared. Have fun. Leave no trace.

Since no one has said it yet. Check when the sun rises and sets and plan to he done atleast an hour before sunsets.
Its much better to start in the dark than the other way around.

OP here, update:

Apparently, it's not going to snow. It's going to warm up to about 50F this weekend and just rain. Reports say there's no snow at higher altitudes either...

So I'm just going to be hiking in the rain instead.

Landslides or avalanches? If you have to watch out for landslides, don't mess with that area. For avalanches just do a quick test in the snow when you're there. Obviously don't try to cross an exposed slope or any steep pitches that you believe to be suspect, especially during the day. Why don't you just skip hiking and get into mountaineering?

The park I'm planning to visit is very heavily forested though, so it probably shouldn't be an issue.

OP here, I did my hike today. There was no snow. Just rainy and windy, with huge gusts on the windward side of the mountains. Very muddy and slippery, but I didn't start any mudslides. Also, I'm an idiot and my toenails were too long. It was very foggy so no good views.

Anyway, did about 9 miles in 7.5 hours, total elevation gain just below 3k ft. That was definitely more than I should have done, I'm far too out of shape these days.

My phone is ancient and the camera sucks, but this is probably the best picture I got...
