My wife got me a fly fishing rod and kit for Christmas. I've only been fly fishing once before with a buddy who basically hand held me through the process and didn't catch anything. I enjoyed it a lot but I'm a real novice, any fundamentals or tips that would be helpful?

Also, general fly fishing thread I guess.

i was in an outdoor club as a kid and personally I found fly fishing to be pretty gay, from tying the flies, picking them out, swishing it around just right, just fucking gay and retarded. I much preferred standing on a dock and yeeting bait out into the ponds with the thumb button style reel

we shot skeet too and my stepdad bought me a pump Remington 887 which looked pretty badass, the other kids all had over-unders so I felt based as fuck. This little fucker Wyatt from Texas was my main competition but I frequently bested him despite the disadvantage of the pump action. Go the fuck back to Texas you piece of shit

get some casting practice in before you hit the water, and buy more flies than you think you'll need cuz you're gonna snap a few and get more hung up in trees. Aim for the seams bruv. Enjoy!

Well as you practice you will be able to get fly out farther def need splitshot..you will kinda cast in a y pattern kinda like shooting trap so in river cast to my right up stream a bit let it flow downstream miter your line and once slack is tight recast repeat

Start with wet flies to get a feel for how the rod works and how to land fish. Tie a flashback nymph at the end of the leader and then tie about a foot of tippet onto the hook and a San Juan worm at the end of the tippet. Some weight above the nymph and maybe a strike indicator. Look for deep pools on the bends. Good luck and don’t get discouraged. I don’t think I caught a fish for the first half dozen outings but it will come

Was about to link this. OP that link will help you more than anyone else. Goes into detail, explains well and has pictures, videos, and diagrams. Good luck and keep with it, there is a learning curve but once you get it it's really fun.

Those are literally for elderly people who cannot tie knots anymore. If you can't tie a better knot than what those make, you need to sit down and practice for all of 10 minutes. Improved clinch is good for fly fishing.

Tuck your elbows. One of the things I find myself screwing up pretty frequently is moving too many of the joints in my arm. Ideally you'll only want to flick your wrist for the small streams, or rotate on your shoulder and hips.
The picture you posted is the most common method of holding the fly rod. Another method is placing your index on the top instead of your thumb. For me, I find that hand grip to be more accurate than the thumb on top grip.

Try the following patterns: Vlahos marbled sand fleas, clouser minnows, crab patterns, and shrimp patterns. There's a ton out there for saltwater. What area of the world will you be fishing?

One of the most important things in learning how to fly fish is a don't.
Don't do too much false casting. Good fly casting can be bad fly fishing.
Pick up the line, get the fly to the fish with the fewest false casts possible, make a clean presentation.
A good cast needs a stealthy pick up of the line and a good presentation of the fly. Everything in between should ONLY add direction and distance to your cast.
Many instructors show how well they can keep 25 yards of fly line in tight loops as long as they want. But this is a futile, useless exercise.

The only thing cool about Cabela's is their gun library. All big name outdoor stores have slowly turned into apparel retailers. I don't need a selection of fifty different "moisture wicking" camo shirts. REI is one of the worst offenders now. The last time I was in there they had a set of cams and a set of draws. Other than that they wanted you to look at the latest Patagonia shit.
