sorry if this is the wrong board, but i've always been wanting to live a job-free life inspired by thoreau's WALDEN and varg's PERMACULTURE.

i love the mountains of norway but i've been wondering if permaculture was even possible in that climate? sweden would be second choice.

also: any tipps for a total newbie like me?

Yes it is but maybe not in the mountains but by the coast. Not only because of climate but because everything is easier on flat terrain. Don't buy the mountain memes, there's a reason why humans have always scarcely populated them. See China Tibet region vs the coast for example, even the northern one

Yes you very much can, I know of multiple people/couples that lives a completely self sufficient lifestyle in the south to mid parts of sweden. One of the couples has about 1,5 swedish "hektar" of land and they produce more food than they can eat so they end up selling quite alot at farmers markets and what not. So you dont need a huge place to be self sufficient and reduce living costs alot or completely. Also rural cottages and farms are not that expensive.

I don't understand this mindset. Why not get food stamps and not pay for food at all and then if you want to larp as a farmer you can sell all your crops

Permaculture doesnt have to mean food forests. In a cold mountainous area your best food source is probably sheep and goats, so a permaculture system can focus on creating sustainable grazing land for them. Managing water infiltration and drainage will be important, you don't want to turn biodiverse forest into endless soggy turf and bracken like in Scotland. You'll want to maintain enough tree cover to prevent erosion and provide wood. Some species like birch can be tapped for sap that can be boiled down into syrup or fermented. For fruit you'll probably have to encourage the growth of whatever native berries you have.

There's no such thing as a "job free" life. If you decide to live off grid, then farming / surviving becomes your job. As in, your 24 hour a day, no sick days, no holidays job in order to keep yourself alive.

The only way you get to live a "job free" life is if you become wealthy enough that you never have to work again. Are you that wealthy? Then you can live in the woods and wake up whenever you want and go hiking for fun.

Otherwise, welcome to a long life of hard labor; whether that's in an office or in a field is up to you.

Varg likely doesn’t receive any welfare but he derives 100% of his income from his music, book, and MYFAROG sales. If you were to take away his passive income he would be dead broke.
