Can someone explain to me how to avoid getting hypothermia? How is it that you can be wrapped up in a sleeping bag and sweat with a bunch of body heat but still freeze to death? Wouldn't the sweat just be the same temperature as the inside of the sleeping bag?

If you are sweating, you aren’t going to freeze to death unless you have some bizarre disease where you sweat uncontrollably for no reason at all. The problem is lies when you stop sweating, and then your wet clothes or sleeping bag turns into an ice cube or evaporatively cools.

Not necessarily true. If you are sweating at 8 oclock and its 35 degrees then its 20 degrees at 2 am you are gonna have a bad time.

water conducts heat via conduction, not radiation. your sleeping bag insulates because it traps an air layer which your body heat, because air is a poor conductor. not only is water a better conductor, it also takes way more thermal energy to raise its temperature, so once it's cold it's taking more energy to heat. If your hot enough to be sweating, it's fine as long as the water goes away as evaporation, but generally in the cold your outer layers are cold enough to condense the water instantly and become a heat sink. Additionally, many insulating materials will clump and collapse when humid or wet (down being the typical offender), and now they wont trap air either and lose their insulating properties. vapor barrier lines work because, although your probably sweating, its probably relatively cold as fuck otherwise you wouldn't use it and the water cant transmit to the outside to begin cooling. Your bag wont get wet either so it maintains the insulation.
