What are they worth? I can't justify the prices they're asking unless it's actually good outdoor gear. They certainly have a clever marketing team, and at least it's not made in China.

You're comparing to high end and made in USA packs. Same for non hunting like Cilogear.
Can add Hill People Gear and Seek also. All those packs offer a lot more modularity.

Pretty solid gear. Over-engineered, quite possibly way more durable than you will ever really need. Oldschool design, no fancy modern stuff like MR for example, heavy too. Surprisingly comfy to wear. If you don't mind classic simple design (backpack is basically one large space) and want something that will possibly outlive you, it's not a bad choice. Additional pouches are however ridiculously over-priced, would go with different brands.

A big part of the price comes from being produced in expensive ass countries, but 350€ for a rucksack that will last you forever is not alot of money in my opinion.

I don't think there would be big difference in quality between US and Finnish manufactured goods. Though Finnish labour is really expensive and partly explains why Savotta is so pricy.

Yeah, they’re not really engineered at all.

It’s an internal frame pack with a load that’s too large for the basic concept. The hip belt rides low and the pack weight sits low relative to it. Some of their packs dont have side pockets, some have non-elastic side pockets, and none are accessible while wearing the pack. Molle webbing isn’t the best idea on an internal frame either. There’s minimal back ventilation compared to trapeze suspension like the REI Traverse, ZPacks Arc Blast, and a bunch of Osprey models (Atmos, Exos, and Levity, probably some others).

But they’re made of 1000D and come in olive drab and black so they’re very popular in /out/.

Varusteleka's pricing has nothing to do with Savotta's pricing. Savotta, like any other manufacturer, sells their products to distributors which then apply a profit margin which is then shared between both parties.

So is an H1 Hummer, but I’d rather commute to work in a Toyota, which will be much more comfortable, efficient, and durable enough for the task.

If my dad handed down his 30yo larpsack, I’d graciously take it and keep it for sentimental value, but I’d be ashamed knowing that my father was such a weird autist as to actually use one of these things (he used Gregory packs in the 80’s like a normal person, which my mom has somewhere).

Wand pockets are pretty useless for real use like these packs are made for. Both tactical and bc/alpine use. Skiis, spotting scopes, rifles, snowshoes, camera gear, etc take priority.
Don't take that as me saying a tactical pack is good for alpine use.

What about what I say is wrong here? When you are OP and looking to buy this bag, that breakdown is exactly what you are looking at since you purchase from a distributor and not the manufacturer. That's exactly why you see the price you see and as far as I am aware Varusteleka are the only distributors of this bag (as with a lot of gear from different manufacturers - woodsknife models and the skrama being case in point) - and even if they aren't, the same breakdown would still apply.

And yes, of course Savotta's price of sale affects Varusteleka's (or any distributor) price of sale, but for no different reasons than what is mentioned in the Varusteleka video - principally location (broken down into taxes and fair wages).

Depends. The external frame on all those packs are for allowing modularity with different size bags. SG and HPG both use internal frames for their "big" packs. Modern internal frames are not like the old or the current mainstream packs. The ones from SG and HPG are stupidly better than any old-school external frame.

I thought Hill People packs used a typical internal frame sheet like nearly everyone else. I’m not sure about them in particular, but the other guy is right; you can’t stack a large load high with an internal frame. The load bearing ability basically stops at neck heigh, and everything has to be wider or deeper (bringing it further from your center of gravity).

I never understood why anyone would use an internal frame bag bigger than like 50L.

How is this unique? You pull them tighter and the weight goes to the shoulder, you loosen them and the weight falls to the hip belt. Or is it doing something magic?

Unless that internal frame extends above the wearers head, that 100L pack will never put the load as close the his center of gravity as an external frame.

When they say it can handle 100lbs they mean the seams won’t rip apart.

A lot of internal frames just have the sheet sewn into the belt. That can work but the HPG rests inside a pockect in the belt.

I'm not aware of anyone else using it. Ya if you just look at it looks like a simple load strap but it's actually a pully that better distributes weight off your shoulder to the belt evenly. Try it out yourself it works very well.

I don't work for HPG so I'm not sure what the correct term is. I've read it called a lifter or a pulley on their forums.
