I grew up in a rural setting but I was a waste of skin gamer and had to be shooed outside every time. Sometimes I caught frogs and such but mostly wasn't outdoorsy. That didn't click on for me until I was in my late teens/early 20's. In generally my entire life flipped around that time. Later I Moved to Utah for school and doubled down on my outdoors interest from there, that was the big moment for this interest for me, I was in one of the greatest outdoors places on the planet. Changed my life.

Generally, know somebody.
I spent my childhood winters learning how my father went /out/ in the old country. Summers with the only indian kid in my village, learning to forage since his family couldn't afford store bought food.
Without someone to tell you directly, I'd suggest just making a basic kit and learning by doing. Download books or videos and set your sights low.
I suggest walking to a lake, catching a trout, and cooking it over a fire. You will need a fishing rod, hooks, sinker, lighter, and a knife. Tent/hammock and blanket if you want to make it an overnight affair.
Dig for bugs or worms. Bait and cast hook. Gather dry deadwood, shave tinder while you wait. Reel fish. Gut, stake, and bleed. Start fire. Cook. Eat. Sleep.
Each of these has special techniques associated, but with exception for tying a knot you can figure it out.

Then I grew up and moved to the hell holes they call cities for education and jobs. It was fun for a while, but then I had to get away at least every other weekend so I took up camping and hiking.

Eventually I moved to an /out/ kinda place and now I'm pretty happy. On the whole, I regret moving away from the countryside. Country girls are just plain better than city girls.

I had gone camping with my family regularly since I was less than a year old until I was a teenager, and I had done a few low risk, easy day hikes. And the ex-whore and I went camping a few times and had a blast/fucked in the tent.

But I wanted to go backpacking. Not sure why, it just looked appealing. But I had no idea where to start. I casually remarked to my brother than I kinda wanted to go, and he said “what’s stopping you?”

About two weeks later I had everything I needed and I set off in my first trip. Low risk, short miles, and fair weather in Mississippi. It was absolutely life changing. 6 months after that I found myself on the 75 mile stretch of the AT in the Smokies. This was pre-internet, btw.

So my advice is the same: what’s stopping you?

Yeah, it’s a lot easier now. You don’t have to figure much out; just watch some YouTube videos and read some online reviews. Literally anything you want can be ordered online. You can easily find trails, too. You don’t need to rely on shady directions that include stuff like “turn left where the sign used to be” or “if you see the fat horse in the side of the road you’re getting close.”

My friends asked if I wanted to go backpacking. The bigger hurdle is getting into hunting. I'm extremely lucky because my grandaddy, who I've met maybe five times, gave me $1,000 worth of guns when I asked my mom for a .22 rifle. I started in my mid 20s mostly fishing. The that led to a desire for hiking. I used to go hike for a few hours and that seemed like a huge adventure to me. Then I started noticing I was limited by daylight so thought I might try camping a bit. Went a few times car camping and easy backpacks one night and got used to it. Start slow (and low).
Not all of /out/ is larping stickfort building bushcraft bullshit or 100000 miles from civilization solitude. Just go on an easy hike and build from there and figure out what you like.
Easy hikes are good enough for you? Fine. Plenty of options about everywhere and it's really low gear, low risk and low skill.
You like hiking, but you want to explore some peaks? Fine. If you start out with the easier stuff, you only need minimal gear (good boots, raingear and a backpack) and just some basic skills and as long as you're not an idiot, it's relatively low risk too.
Hiking is not for you, but those rock walls interest you? Well, climbing is one of those things where you really need some professional instruction, but again, the basics aren't rocket science.
…and so on. As long as you're not an idiot that wants to do everything at once, or an incel >muh bushcraft!!! LARPER, getting started is really easy.

If you have a carrying bag just buy a sleeping bag and some kind of shelter, preferably something to protect yourself from mosquitoes as well. As you go on you start acquiring more stuff according to your necessities. I started out as a poor uni student, have acquired everything that I need through the span of 3 years. I would advice getting the bare necessities and camping out just to see if you even like doing it.

got my start with my old man in the cub scouts and later made it to Eagle Scout before everything went tits up with the BSA since they went full globohomo. After I Eagled out I went to college and didnt go /out/ for several years but I finally went back out in the middle of summer last year and had the worst night of sleep I have ever had in my 23 years of sleep sleeping on the ground in my old two man tent. Since that happened I have started purchasing all the expensive shit I need to go hammock camping. I bought myself a warbonnet blackbird XLC for my Christmas present and have ordered a thunderfly tarp. Also the need to get away from screens since I work in IT was driving me nuts so /out/ was a great choice and I am a lardass to the point where it has serious detriment on my health but I have started going to the gym this year to get fit enough to hike once spring hits this year. Its hard but I feel fucking good and I cant wait for spring.

I prolly fell in love with the outdoors and going on hikes because of the LOTR, being a kid i used to imagine i was a member of the fellowship whenever we'd go out. And then when i was a teen it started just being my dad and i going out for the holiday hikes rather than the whole family (my mum and brother have always been indoor folks), but yeah its just how its always been add that to a childish imagination and not having enough money to go to poor typical holiday places it just makes sense
