Doesn't need to be fancy, just needs to be durable, able to receive radio waves, and can be powered by a hand crank, or something similar.

Something like pic related, I guess, though I can't vouch for this specific model.

I second. Not exactly "survival" because its not waterproof and doesnt have solar/crank power but the cc pocket is pretty good.

I picked up a baofeng 9W radio for cattle chasing and it's lasted a year of hard dusty use. It was $50 and only downside is it probably broadcasts everything you say to China.

Actually bought that piece of shit. Thankfully was able to get a refund. Radio reception was shit even with an added antenna extension. Wouldn't take a charge with the crank. Wouldn't charge at all after a couple of weeks.

Baofeng is the way to go, get an antenna and battery extension and that shit will be all you need. Its got FM radio for music and a HAM function to reach out to local ranger stations. Plus the battery will last days.

I just built a bathroom for a HAM radio operator. I just might get a license, kinda of cool to be able to use the radio without getting into trouble.

ah, i'd rather that than the other haha. i was hoping to use mine to find and hit repeaters during trips up in the sierras but the pandemic put a hold on the exams because they do all of them in person

i saw a few videos of guys using a power meter, and you are correct. these radios typically put out 5 watt.
