If you are just hiking and not jogging the trail wear a light weight boot. Ankle high preferably. Better for mud and ankle support.

Has anyone tried approach shoes for hiking? I like scrambley hikes, and they would expand my ability to do some impromptu bouldering on hikes, but I'm worried about tread wear.

modern hiking "boots" really are just high cut sneakers / trail runners. i'd stick with the boots, on the basis that they do what the trail runners do nearly as well, and that you're simplifying your life just wearing them all the time.

It's pretty much what approach shoes are designed for.
Just examine the soles of potential purchases to suit the terrain you'll mostly use them on. Some will have climbing features on the soles. La Sportiva approach shoes certainly do anyway.

I use trail runners, but I’m not going off trail much and I don’t live in an area with lots of jagged rocks (like parts of New England). And I’m hiking, not hunting or carrying a lot of weight. Still, ankle support is mostly a meme. It’s similar to raised heels; people think it’s needed because it’s what’s always been around.

Started with trail runners, moved to boots as i kept destroying runners too quickly. Mostly on the very rocky PA appalachians.

I prefer to go barefoot with a pair of light moccasins or minimalist shoes in my pack in case I come across a bunch of sharp ass gravel or something. As much as it might sound like a meme going barefoot gives you an insane amount of proprioception, balance, traction, and it doesn't hurt your feet or cause blisters over long distances like footwear does. Take the barefoot pill brother.

I've twisted my ankle multiple times in boots and never in trailrunners. Training your calves and losing some (body/pack) weight is much more effective.

You just don’t get it. A heavy boot has trade offs and cause different injuries. Not totally against boots though. The mountain men used to wear buckskin moccasins. Do you just randomly fall down? You should wear a helmet also

got real bad ankle sprain a couple of years back that i never let heal properly so gotta wear boots with shafts that prevent side roll or else i get pain as soon as i even hit an incline and forget about going off trail without them. before that i always used trail runners similar to >>1981271

Lone Peaks for me. Trail Runners dry out faster than boots when they get wet. Gortex on boots is a meme in the summer. Basepack weight of 5lbs in the summer also.

Same. I’ve been using Lone Peaks since the 2’s came out (the originals looked even more like clown shoes). They’re not very good off-trail but I’m rarely on any kind of terrain that would hurt them.

what should I do anons I've been hiking for my whole life and have never had this problem. I have gone walking around my area with my boots on (Just walking my dog for an hour or so) and my hip still hurts. Is it my boots? or is it space magic targeted at me to fuck over me and my hobbies? Being /out/ is now pretty hard as my hip just decides to stop working at what seems to be random.

Yeah, there are low cut hiking shoes. They have sturdy soles like boots but are low cut like a running shoe. You lose some weight, allows for some mobility but provides a good deal of support. It’s an ok middle ground if that’s what you’re looking for.

I used North Face 109’s for a short while. The toe box was a little tight but they’re well made. I was leery considering the brand isn’t really in the shoe market. Excellent reviews.

Looks good. I guess I'm looking for something like the Lowa's in OP, but their current stuff is mostly all GTX, which I wouldn't want for that kind of shoe. If the weather is that bad I'd just wear a boot for water protection.

I usually use boots because I like the ankle support and it stops so much debris from getting in your shoe vs a trail runner. I have a pair of nike sfb boots which are basically trail runners with a nylon/canvas leg gaiter built in very light. Pic related is what I have been using at the moment I was able to get them for 50% off and haven't worked them as hard as the nikes but they are incredibly comfortable right out the box only thing so far is that the laces always seem to undo themselves if I don't double knot

Depends on the terrain, pack weight and weather. I use both. 71km established track with 14kg of weight (hammock, food, water, gear) i wore running shoes. 83km poorly marked route in bush with high gain and loss as well as rain and heavier pack (tent, more food and clothes) i used 8inch high tramping boots.

I work in the pharmaceutical industry and I always wear proper PPE. I wear boots when climbing mountains and crampons when traversing glaciers. I use a rope when and where appropriate. Also wear a helmet. Still not wearing boots when hiking on an established trail. Stay mad, anklet.

I've got shoe and boot versions of the same model.
Shoes in summer, boots in winter or if it's muddy or rocky to protect my ankles.
I quite like having the same fit and feel but high and low.
I've always preferred leather, but these are pretty good. Need something with a more rigid sole though.
Anyone know something in leather, stiffer sole, both hi and lo version available?

If you're a beginner stick with boots. Once you actually know how to walk trail runners are by far the best. Just make sure not to cheap out on them. Ankle support is the biggest bullshit lie people tell themselves to justify their shitty life decisions.

Comfort is one of the most important qualities of a shoe, and trail runners are light years ahead of boots. They have also all the tech stuff boots have only they're much lighter.

Think about it, running is far more demanding and hard then just walking. So go with the gear running folks use since it's optimized for that.

Maybe a walking shoe vs. a standard road running shoe but actual hiking boots are, generally, much more robust than trail runners. Distances all being equal I burn through runners way faster than boots.

Furthermore, trail running is generally just one's own weight with some light additions (water, snacks, vest, etc.) while actual backpacking is moving through generally much rougher terrain with generally much larger weight additions.

You're pretty much dead wrong.

While hiking, being generally out i have seen:
Sprained ankles: 6
Injured knees: 0

A shallow hole that may be deep enough will sprain your ankle. That same hole wearing high boots will no where near apply the same force to your knee who will be at best annoyed for a bit.
