Keb, especially gaiters, are better unless you're walking through thorns and shit because the stretch fabric catches everything.
Plus I like convertible stuff, as long as the zip is above the knee so it doesn't chafe.
Can find it on heavy discount for the older version with the fucking stupid ankle shock cord tightening. Still pricey but 60% off is worth it in my opinion.
Prana make good out pants too, but again if you're going through heavy brush it'll catch a lot.
I wear them doing construction outside in the summer. They hold up surprisingly well to abrasion, but some of the seams have started failing over 4 years and I've had to patch+reinforce some areas.
Surplus is ok to start, it'll fall apart quickly but you can just repair it. A lot of my surplus gortex stuff is still going strong, I lend it out all the time to people. Not the most comfy or breathable but it gets the job done.
