As for what I bring along, other than food, sleep, shelter and change of clothes, the basic stuff would be small 7x32 binocs, a silva compass, my peasant knife, a paper map of the area, headlamp, analogue watch, point an shoot camera, notebook with pen and paper, bottle, steripen, little cooking kit, first aid and some light rope and a tarp. Sounds like a lot but it all packs down pretty tight and this bag has a lot of pockets and those leather things to strap stuff on your bag which I tend to use a lot.
