what is the closest to the wild west in today's world? Can I still be a cowboy or a dude rancher? I wanna explore some arid climates with a rifle at my side and a horse on my saddle. Alternatively, what are some textbook frontiers? mostly unexplored, large amounts of wild land, etc

I would say the oceans as well as very remote parts of the north like interior alaska, canada and Siberia.
Im currently reading the the journals of lewis and clark and makes me sad reading about them sailing through this untouched wilderness rich in game and beauty and that nowadays its almost all destroyed.

The closest equivalent is working as a geological surveyor in Alaska, Northern Canada or Siberia.

boat/helicopter/bush plane/snowmobile are the modern equivalents to a horse.

If you can handle very cold winters during certain years northern/ north-eastern Minnesota is an amazing outdoors experience, especially if you enjoy trapping/fishing. I know you're looking for the cowboy experience but self-subsistence is very possible here if you have the ability and skills to work part time and hunt/grow your own foods.

I sometimes try to imagine what the UK must have been like before man ruined it, which is going a long long way back now I think. But I bet the first humans here thought they'd found a paradise. Few extremes of hot and cold, plenty of fresh water, few big predators and nasty insects etc, endless firewood and forest to hide in, endless game and fishing, natural barriers to invaders, absence of natural hazards, useful minerals literally lying on the ground in lots of places. I look at it and think there must be opportunities to make money, but God knows how these places are ever going to improve.
