Professional forester here. I carry a pocket boy every day because it literally fits in my pocket. Unless that's specifically important to you DO NOT purchase a folding saw. Buy a fixed one.

I've got an Outdoor Edge 'Flip N Saw' that is really thin and sturdy. Solid aluminum handle scales. I like it.

I rarely need a saw, because I'm not out building unnecessary structures, the cheepo coghlan's folding saw suffices for what little I do need it for.

t.used them all, and use at least one a day

Saws are nice for building, but not /out/, unless you can't carry a chopping knife for some reason.

only annoyance is the blade isn't fixed into the groove when its folded so it can swing free sometimes, so you have to put some cord around it or something

Pfft no, you can process reasonable sized pieces into rounds with much less effort than an axe. You're not your ancestors, affordable, compact and effective handsaws are widely available.

It's more tiring to saw than to chop.

Though this can depend on your build. Sawing is more cardiac, whereas chopping is muscle.

I removed the locking wire on mine and just tightened the adjustment screw so that the saw blade doesn't come out freely but is still easily opened with two hands. It also makes it much easier to stick in a pocket since it won't hang-up on anything.

Removing the locking mechanism requires putting in a pair of washers to use as spacers to keep the saw centered. Minor detail, but easy enough to get.

They haven't. A saw is superior to a knife or an axe when it comes to making horizontal cuts relative to the wood grain. That's it. For everything else, axes and knives are superior.

Could someone explain this to me, because I don't get it.
I'm behind the saw- it's a low energy way of cutting and shaping wood and it's a very light tool compared to an axe or hatchet.

But what's the upshot of different types of saws?
>carpenters/ woodword saws
>regular tension blade wood saws, the type with disposable blades
>folding hand saws
>fix blade hand saws (zubat)
>wire saws, the type you tension with a piece of wood
I've used a bunch but have no real opinion.

When I'm /out/ I rarely if ever saw wood for a fire.
I might cut a tree halfway with a saw to fell it, but once they are down I usually just smash them by levering them between two tree trunks then just feed in the large end. Logs with one end burnt light faster anyway.
People think it's autistic just smashing wood like a caveman- but it's faster.
Maybe sawing and splitting takes less energy- hard to say.

Sawing logs is really for when you want to dry them or burn them inside.

You get a lot more bite in the cutting face, when you are using a hand saw you only have on point of contact and you really pull to cut so it's important.
I also find there is a lot less friction, because you are only cutting the section your blade is in contact with.

unless the wood is green and thinner than your wrist a saw is always going to work out better for you.
Beyond that a chopping tool may be faster, but it's more effort and you're facing diminishing returns.

Chopping tools can also result in serious injury, which everyone swears black and blue has never happened to them but statistically happens to someone.
When you are tired, working in low light, and working at an awkward angle etc injuries happen- innawoods you can't always pick and choose.
