i'm not an outdoorsy kind of guy so maybe there is
something i'm not considering.
from what i gather it started as amilitary thing,but isn't it inconvenient to carry trash with you after you ate the content,especially if you don't want to leave traces?
also,it looks like it takes more space than just carrying neatly positioned food?

None of that stuff is Ready to Eat though so it's not MREs.

I myself prefer food that doesn't need to be vacuum sealed, and I keep it all in reusable plastic boxes. Meals usually consist of dry sausage, vegetables kept in olive oil, semolina, gingerbread and muesli. Great nutritive value and doesn't even need to be cooked.

It's not inconvenient to carry the trash, depending on what you're doing you don't end up carrying the trash. They're packed full in specific manners by the companies that manufacture them, and you simply pick and choose from your meals what you actually need to bring.

Example: field stripped MRE's usually consist of the big bag, the main meal, and whatever secondary you toss in there + cheese or whatnot. Bundle it up and tape it closed. Tada, one meal and an integral trash bag. You MIGHT leave one in a box if you're going to bring along some of the heaters if mission lets you, but most field stripped MRE's you'll eschew the heater and most of the other stuff.

What you don't actually have in the meal pouch itself, you might relocate for easy snacking on the go. It all depends.

They're manufactured in a specific manner for packaging easily and protecting the meals themselves during transport. First thing you do if you're going to be taking them into the field in a ruck is poke a hole in the main bag so it can deflate some. There's a good bit of air in there.
