Depends though. I usually wear shorts with permethrin and DEET on my calves. The most important precaution against ticks though is regularly checking the legs. Especially before going to sleep in the tent. You have to do this with pants as well but I have an easier time looking for the bastards with shorts on. Next thing is a hight quality toll to remove ticks. I use the sling method.

I love it when I go in hiking groups and I just wear my old Army issue pants, tucked into my boots, and a long sleeve shirt. It'll be 100 degrees and I won't give a fuck. Meanwhile everyone else are in shorts and t-shirts with boots and long socks complaining about the bugs. I have maybe 3 bites on exposed skin and I don't even wear bug spray.
