Is the Tarptent Contrail as nice as I think it is? Can anyone tell me about their experiences with this tent?

I don't have experience with that particular brand, but have extensive experience with tarp tents. I love them, but there are a few things that bother some people.

That being said they are awesome, especially for mountain use, I carry a lightweight personal mosquito net when I'm around a lot of bugs. The biggest downside is that it isn't freestanding so pitching it can be difficult in rocky areas. The MSR hubba hubba is a nice freestanding tent. My megamid bit the dust and I've been looking to replace it, have you looked at Mountain Laurel designs?

I guess the brand name Tarptent is a bit of a misnomer, at least in the case of the Contrail. It has a floor and a bug barrier - an entire inner tent, actually. This pic shows it more clearly.

A tarp isn't a TarpTent (TM). TarpTents combine tarps and tents. The inner tent can be detached and you can use the tarp alone, or the tent alone in dry weather. You also pitch the whole thing together with the tarp already attached, so that the inner tent doesn't get wet if it's raining. With a tent you have to set up the tent first then the rainfly.

Hilleberg has some tents that function similarly as a tarptent.

I got said model and I like it, it is light, easy to set up and good quality. It has its limitations however, it is clearly 3 season, you need to pitch it right in rain, and for the price and range of use you might as well could use a tarp/hammock combination. Still a good deal with the bug net.

My wife calls me a "tent slut" as I have many of them. This one looks good, right price, lightweight, includes full-enclosure netting. Keeping bugs out is important if you have ever been awoken by an insect crawling into your ear. I stopped using my Black Diamond Megamid after that happened a couple times, only use fully enclosed tents from now on.
