I'm on the market for a dedicated ATV/UTV GPS that I can bolt onto my handlebars of my Honda trx420, preferably something I can rig to my quad's battery. I live in the Idaho panhandle, and I don't want to use my phone. What would you guys suggest?

Have you gone to an outdoors store and looked at their GPS selection? Last time I was in Sportsman's to get my sat phone/GPS, they had a few that looked like they were more for your purpose. I don't think you'll need to rig it to your quads battery though.

I know I can buy online and at a sportsmans. I'm asking here for recommendations on specific models. I want to hook it up to my quad so I don't have to worry about battery life. I'd also like a tachometer since my trx420 doesn't have one, and these GPS units usually have a tachy feature included.

garmin etrex if you just need basics. oregon/montana if you want a bigger map. gps apps these days are so good though, it's hard to beat a $75 ruggedized kyocera from ebay with a $5 app. look on advrider gps section for ideas.

Used to run a 76Cx on my toys. Big 12v connector on it doesn't need ext. regulation, it can take automotive voltage right on the unit.
""Upgraded"" to a 22x... and I kind of hate it. The back button is also the page button, so if you miss a page you have to cycle through all the pages again. The way it organizes files on disk (internally) is a disaster. The UI is too "pretty" for what it needs to do, it looks nice but some aspects of it lost the functionality due to the fluff. Not as intuitive as the older units.

Ram mounts on all my handlebars.

also good info, thanks. Is garmin the go-to for mobile GPS units? I have an old iphone that doesn't hold a charge, but if I can rig a charger to it, i could use it instead. Big problems are won't have service and won't be weatherproof.

Garmin is the best supported for additional maps. Gpsfiledepot, for example.
There are other mfgrs but they're years behind garmin.
Phones work, but you may need a few apps for the features of a dedicated gps. Ruggedness of the connectors is a factor. But so is screen size/res.
