A few years ago I was using a zpacks solplex. It was alright. Super light, but a little too small for me.

Sold that and switched to a big agnus copper spur hv ul 2. This has been my go to. I primarily just use the footprint and fly. Comes in at 2 lbs. Really nice tent.

This year I'll primarily be using a borah gear 7x9 tarp and I'll have the copper spur if I do any trips where I need a free standing setup or if I know I'm heading into really bad weather.

If you're looking for a tent I just saw that gossamer gear's 'the one' tent is on sale for $225. Looks like a good tent at a fair price.

Have the Hubba Hubba, can confirm. I've heard there are better tents for the price, but I have no complaints. Kept me dry in a heavy thunderstorm. Slept two people and a small dog with no issues on another time.

To each their own, but I'm not a hammock guy myself. I own a hummingbird hammock, but I prefer a tarp. I use the hammock on day trips to lounge around, but when I hike I like to go light and fast. It's not just the weight. It's also the bulk. I can put together a much more streamlined kit with a tarp than I can with a hammock.

My morning ritual. I call it "the terminator". First I crouch down in the shower in the classic "naked terminator" pose. With my eyes closed I crouch there for a minute, visualizing Arnold and I start to hum the terminator theme. Then I rise up and open my eyes wide open. It helps to proceed through my day as an emotionless, cyborg badass. But theres one huge problem. If the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It ruins my fantasy and I can't get hard again.

The only one I can see is weight, possibly ventilation. Looks like it would only work in dry climates without much wind, however.

Tents like the X-mid and Stratospire seem like they're the current state of the art. I have a hard time imagining what the next step in tent innovation would be, if we count "innovation" as reducing weight while maintaining comfort of living.

Look up 12 survivors Shire tent. I own the 6 man version, and it's about 15 minutes to set up for two people, can hold 3 cots in it at once, and is pretty good for up in the Pacific Northwest.

There’s also the factor of the California influence. It’s been around for decades. California is the most populous state by far, and when it comes to hiking opportunities it’s miles beyond the next few populous states. Like, it’s not even close. So you have millions of people who hike all concentrated in a place that goes through a binary rain cycle; it’s very wet in the winter then a virtual drought the rest of the year. In a place like that, sure, you can get away with a tent that might not even be waterproof. It’s the same reason everyone carries a ccf pad without a way to cover it if it starts raining.

That’s all the Stratospire is; reduced weight. I guess the hexagonal fly is different, maybe. The inner isn’t much different than any other two pill design. No, but the rest of the tents here are Kelty, Walmart, REI etc. The Plexamid is certainly not a cheap tent. For a one person tent $550 is a premium price to pay.

DCF is something stupid like 15,000mm while most of your nylon or poly tents will be around 3,000. DCF isn’t affected by UV rays. Tear strength is exceptionally high, especially considering the weight of the fabric (something like 55lbs). They claim it’s 15 times as strong as steel of the same dimensions, but I dunno. Not sure about abrasion.

It’s too bad there aren’t any gear west’s working in metrology labs set up to test this.

Honestly I don't think it is any less tough than the other traditional backpacking tents I've owned. But it is single walled so it is important to look after its well-being as much as possible. Ya, the specs are crazy on DCF; it is much more durable than it feels / looks.
I haven't had any problems with it, even buying mine second-hand from an old hobo living in a broken down RV in Tucson who hiked most of the AT with it. It did have a small hole where a mouse chewed through but with DCF tape that was an easy fix. Other than that, it is still tip top shape to this day.

Pyramid designs are actually really strong. The step walls end up shedding a lot of snow, and the 15,000mm hh rating means nothing is going to melt and leak in. It won’t hold up as well as a four season tent, but that’s a special circumstance that most people won’t need.

Permethrin and spray some deet on a bandana and hang above you. Problem solved. Shaved more than a pound off your base weight and you have less bulk so you can run a smaller pack saving even more weight.
