It reduces the risks of infection, which is actually a huge problem when outside, and ensures your lens is clean and there aren't particles in between your eye and lens that are scratching your cornea, which can cause your vision to be so fucked it can't be recovered. Which is why it requires insane logistics, because your fingers need to be more than clean, and ideally you need a particle free environment.
There's been so many problems with these contacts that risks have become much larger than benefits. I know enough people who after 10 years of wearing such contacts have their eyes ruined to risk that.
