A lot of people get thrown off by the shorts/no shoes combo but if I remember correctly he doest advocate people copy him in this regard. His books are a little bit different but honestly id recommend them as a starting point because he puts emphasis on maintaining ones body core temperature, in contrast to other "survival" books that show you 20 variations of a deadfall trap that isn't really effective. He has also been mentored by some very big figureheads in the outdoor community primarily Mors Kochanski.
