I've started work on a PVC pack frame, pic related is the start of the bottom shelf and hip belt mount points. ITT I'll be posting updates of my progress, feel free to ask questions or share what you're working on.

pvc is a really shitty material.
it does not handle uv and cold well. it becomes brittle very fast under bad conditions. and is generally weak.
but i'm curious how this will turn out seems thicker than most attempts i saw.

What kind of pack are you using it with?

I've never used a pack with either internal or external frame. I thought they were (at least mostly these days) specifically made for each other.

it's 3/4" pvc, and i'm planning on painting it which will help with UV damage. as far as temps go, I live in VA so that won't come up often. I have an internal that I use for most backpacking, I just wanted a smaller pack with good ventilation for those 100+ summer days,

yeah i saw a thread on another forum where some dude had capped the ends and sealed it so he could attach a nalgene hose to the base and use it as a hydration system. i'd imagine having your frame full of sloshing water would get old fast though

Interesting idea, Anon. You can make a bow out of PVC pipe, so it might have the right kind of spring for a frame. Also, you can heat it up and shape it, so you might be able to do some contours if you have a heat gun.

Update: The frame has come along well, going to do some heat gun work and drill holes for the hardware tomorrow. Probably going to string paracord across the top section to make it easier to lash on jackets and other stuff. The clevis pins from the original frame are too small to work on 3/4" pvc, so i might drill holes in some carriage bolts or just use regular hex nuts

you can get a kelty 65l external frame for $140 new and I am sure you could get something second hand for like fiddy bucks. you should at least invest a couple bucks in the thing you have to strap to your back all day...

the fit is pretty good, distributes weight well and i've got plenty of space above and below. admittedly the raw pvc looks jank as fuck, most likely going to paint it black once i'm finished tinkering

Black is a bad idea if heat and sun are the primary concerns
PVC starts to get soft at 60c, black plastic in the direct sun will definitely start to warp if it's under any stress.
Maybe a fabric sleeve?

total cost of materials for the frame was like 15 bucks, making a fabric sleeve sounds like more work than it's worth. this is a stupid question but would it be crazy to spray paint it metallic silver/gold? would that have any effect on the heat absorption?

Don't worry about making it metallic-looking. Just sand it down a bit, if you really really really want it to not look like plain PVC, and get some plastic-specific spray paint that bonds better.

I found when painting pvc pipe, you should probably use some sort of primer. It seems that with normal rustolium it doesn't go well onto the plastic becuase its already painted white. I think using a primer would be able to make the finish come out far better.

Imagine being so sheltered that you have never seen some spic or homeless pvc supported tarp. Then imagine being so far down the spectrum that you think making a frame out of PVC is "creative" and interesting. The OP and some of the anons ITT are something. Anyway, OP your project a proof of concept at best best. Get a drill and some alluminum tubes. Maybe even a tube bender if your handler can help you out.

it's not creative, i'm just trying out something that interested me on the internet. obviously yeah, aluminum is an objectively superior material but i don't want my first attempt at a pack frame to be aluminum since it's a more difficult material to adjust as you're learning.

Dont buy from the renovation centre, find some metal supplier, or ask a fabrication shop, or better yet go to a scrap yard recycling centre, it should costs a few quarters a foot. No amount of tofu ingestion will justify using pvc for this

In the sun, I could imagine it getting to 140f. Think about how hot black pavement gets in the sun or how hot black cars get in the summer.

I'm not sure how much heat is retained in plastics, but I could maybe see it being a problem if left out in the sun.
