I wear my thick work cowhide gloves and a sharp knife will go through it like it was aluminum foil.
Also a good thing is learning how to make cuts and be held and slices.
I years ago, tend to have alot of strength and when the cut I was making slipped or broke through it would jam into my hand or fingers.
Take it easy and take the time to gain some feel for your tools and how whatever material you are carving reacts.
Learn patience in the beginning and as you get faster you will enjoy making things look easy.
