do you talk a lot on your hikes?

I went on a hike with some friends and they decided I talk a thousand percent more when i'm hiking.

Which do you prefer, contemplative silence or interesting conversations?

It depends. Group hikes with people who are seasoned hikers always seems more interesting. But a state park near me holds easier group hikes and the people who regularly go are just terribly stupid and talk non-stop, even when the naturalist stops to tell us about something. It's also annoying during the night hikes when all you want to do is listen for owls and nightjars.

A mix of both. I tend to get very quiet and introspective in the outdoors. But good conversation around the campfire is always important.

But someone who won't shut up is asking for me to abandon them in the woods

Hiking allows for deeper conversation without the awkwardness of sitting in a room starring at the person trying to think of what to say, and the environment around you usually promotes discussion. I find I can talk for hours about politics when I hike, but have a difficult time with it at any other time.

On short hikes it's pretty normal. On longer ones it's usually more about silence and thinking. On a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters we did about 10 miles a day, and that was usually pretty quiet, except for the occasional navigation stuff and portages.

I find with canoeing, because of the effort involved with moving down a river an controlling the boat, it becomes more of a game and takes away the need to entertain yourself with discussion.

when hiking, I like to concentrate on the sounds my boots make when they hit the ground, keeping my rhythm and occasionally stopping to hear the wildlife. I'll talk on a break, like when you get past a steep rock face or at the peak, but during the hike, I try take the time to appreciate all that's within me and without me. That is, my footsteps versus the sounds of nature.

This guy has got it in a nutshell. Me and my friends all use hikes as an excuse to have a bit of peace in the day so theres not much talking unless we're discussing the route.

At camp however we crack open a few beers and have a right laugh over the fire. Its the most glorious feeling in the world being /out/ in the night air under the trees with just the sound of the fire and you can your mates having a nice time.

I want to go on a hike now

I always liked the idea of sharing that moment of silence with your friends while enjoying a few beers over a campfire. The sounds of the fire juxtaposed against the silence of the forest at night... it's really a beautiful thing that you simply don't talk about at the time because you're often busy appreciating it.

I hike on a somewhat regular basis with this guy I know. Normally he is a pretty quiet and reserved person, but once we're out hiking he opens up and you really get to talk with him. We usually go hiking in the High Peaks area in the ADK and at only 18 it is surprising how much he knows about the area and the ADK in general.

When the going's gentle it can be nice to chat a little, the mood of the group changes over the course of a hike though and sometimes you're more inclined to be silent.

On a couple of occasions we've sung together while hiking: once in completely featureless desert terrain to keep our spirits up when there was nothing to look at - we must have been at it for hours, we eventually ran out of songs we all knew. Another time crossing mountain meadows we sang old hymns from our childhood - we're not even religious or anything, just brought back happy memories and felt right at the time.

Yeah, just for fun with your companions. It's a shame when people are embarrassed to sing with buddies, or decide they can't sing when if they tried they'd be fine.

Traditional walking songs are easy and fun to sing, in part because they're pitched for the average voice not some pop singer, and don't rely on harmonies to sound right. Singing's pretty much universal anyway, not doing it is a modern convention.

Yeah I was there at the beginning of Feb hitting 12 miles on the ouchita with a heavy pack 9in 2 out. Worst part was the 30something degree water river crossing without sandals.. Teach me to not check the topo when someone else sets the trip up.
