Alright boys, I'm a father now, and it's time to address the serious questions. What can I catch on the placenta?

I have about 2 pounds of it, it is dark and livery, and very tough so it will probably stay on the hook well. Catfish and burbot are an obvious choice. I've never caught a bowfin, and I'm wondering if tiny slices would be good for perch. Suggestions?

He won't be able to have solid food for a long time, I think everyone including me would appreciate having it out of the freezer before then. Depending how my wife heals I may be able to bring him on the ice and use it for bait on his first fishing trip.

I tried setting it to normal mode and couldn't see anything live, nearly a 10 second delay between moving my lure and being able to see that movement on the screen because the water depth numbers were in the way. I used my buddies unit once that had a very similar layout, it was just vertical instead of circular. It also had a "normal" screen next to the vertical flasher and I wound up looking at the vertical flasher most of the time. I know it's a meme, I think my settings were just fucky. It doesn't help that I have the wrong kind of transducer, it's the stock one that you're supposed to strap to a trolling motor or boat hull. I'm going to make a PVC mount for it that holds it nicely under the hole a foot or two and play with my settings more once I can get out on the ice during daytime. I'll try both screens then too.

Transducer shouldn't make too big a difference, if you see the lure at all it means you're level enough, the tech is the same except the boat one might have added side imaging or whatever transceivers also. My unit also gets laggy sometimes like your describing. I don't know why, thess are the reasons to buy flashers. The other thing is depth, my unit has all problems when under 15' for some reason. I don't fucking know why.

I think i just figured out what that interference was. I was fishing in the inside corner of a dock that is T shaped, and theres a piling right there. I saw the piling, went "ooh structure I bet theres a fish there" and drilled a hole, didn't even think about it till right now.

Possible, depending how close you were. If I remember the picture from the last thread though I would expect more clear area at the top where the cone hasn't reached yet, you have it right though you just have to fuss with it.

Only thing to do is try an open location, and maybe even have someone else with you who also has a transducer. That would give you a good control to compare against. I sometimes wish I could ice fish where I live, but it's not in the cards. I do enjoy reading about everyone's experiences though. Maybe one day...

Haven’t gotten alligator gar, but spotted or florida gar, was going to mention they’re hard to hook. They like to swim real shallow at dusk in the summer and snap at shit near the top. You have to play with them a bit to get a bite, and baits with lots of treble hooks have a better shot of landing them. Stupid fuckers will snap at spinnerbaits a bunch some days.

I've gotten them on a couple of different things, including artificial worms. The old redneck trick is to get a length of old gnarled rope, and tie some bait to the end. Their teeth will get tangled in the rope and you can pull them in. That seems a little heartless though, so I'll stick with hooks. They are the best freshwater fight I have found. Little to medium ones especially will greyhound all over the surface when hooked.

A few days of trying. It's really complicated cause depending on the time of year, where you are fishing, and what bait you are using, it can be insanely easy or hard.

In general it's easier to catch stuff during the summer (There are exceptions for various species). Certain fish are crazy about particular baits. Anywhere that there is bluegill around where I live, they will go absolutely nuts for live worms.

As to your other question, I literally know nothing about Boston. Sorry.

Caught my first size fish last night, pink snapper, put it in a bucket of water with a lid on with the intention of killing it when I got home (had no ice), by the time I got home it was dead I'm assuming from lack of oxygen. Yes, bleed it out immediately for best quality of meat and most humane treatment.

In warm weather, the fish should be put on ice too, but you can get away without if it's cooler, or you filet it within a short while (how long precisely depends on actual temp and species and also size).

Dumping it in a bucket of water is like using a big trash bag to suffocate a person, except fish have less capacity to suffer than more complex organisms like people.

Yes they are usually labeled like XXX-3500 or XXX-35 for short. 1000 is the smallest sized reel you can buy. My go-to reel sizes are 2500-4000

Have some old deer bones floating around my wife picked up years ago. Made an ice rod handle for one of my super soft AliExpress blanks. Bone, fiberglass and polyurethane, just like the cavemen did it.

It’s not the giant alligator gar, it’s a Florida Gar I think. Those are size 13 shoes so that fish muat have been 20”-24”. Also big hands so this pic won’t make it look any larger.

i like the feeling of it, i feel birdsnests are easier to fix and less risk of line being "dragged down" into the spool on a hook set
i fish for pike mainly, and i fish places where distance really isnt an option since its old fortification canals with thick vegitation or each side
so i like when i get a bait stuck, that i can trust my line not to break, would rather bend out a hook then loose a bait

Pic related, I measured the rod to compare and IIRC, this was like 26”. It was fat too, wish I would’ve weighed it. Honestly though, it wasn’t a big fight. Those fat big bass are lazy.

I haven’t done much fishing worth a damn lately. Always some shit to get done outside of work with the wife and house and playing shadetree mechanic on the weekend.

Can confirm. I put a measuring tape on my paddle as well for easy reference when I'm out on the water. It's only 2 feet though, but it was free at a boat show. Pic 1. Bass with rod. It's over a decade old, so I'm not going to lie and say I recall the size. I don't.

That’s a good idea, get some electrical tape and mark that shit every 6”.

I would be down to get a couple yaks one day. Get me a Hobie and get the wife a smaller one to paddle around while I’m fishing. There’s ‘yak rental places all over, a launch into the intercoastal nearby. Rented them for a day in The Keys and it was fun.

Not that much. The ponds and canals are too warm most of the year and the big bass don’t fuck with big baits when the water is like a heated pool. I’ll throw on a 1/2” spinner or lipless crank when a cold front is about to roll in.

They are worth it. If you can afford the better models get one, but if not, cheaper ones manage well. This board has travelled all over with me the past 5 years and has treated me well, after some tweaks. I basically converted into a SUP Yak, so I can sit when I need to and have some leverage, and stand when I want and get a good stretch of better casting distance/angle. I got stuck in some rough weather when I first got the board, and sitting and paddling with no back rest was brutal, painful work. I may have to do the electrical tape thing for measuring. That's a really good idea. I like mine for it's portability too. It fits inside the car, so I feel like it's a little safer than strapped to the roof when I travel.

I've heard that rather than using hooks, you use a length of nylon rope to catch them. They have really fine teeth but bony mouths, so the rope gets tangled in their teeth. Haven't tried myself, just what I've been told

You might still find clearance stuff right now at stores, but usually November or so is the best time to get some decent prices on stuff. It's a way to load up and get a nice variety if you want to go that route. No bullshit, I walked out of my local Shart Mart with a shopping cart full of different lures, an Ugly Stick, and a retractable net for 40 bucks. The guy back there was tagging it all to get rid of it, and I would hand him something, he'd scan it, it wouldn't show in their inventory, and he'd say, "Yeah, 75 cents for this one", and sticker it. I'll try to dig around and see if I still have the cart pic, because I couldn't believe myself what was happening. I could have hugged that guy. I still try to drop in just to say Hi to him when I can. I'm finding that I occasionally get good scores at Ollie's too. I don't know if you have any of those.

Cable managment at the top of the extension. It's one of those twist tie things, there are two sets of holes, one small set to keep it from falling off (it was a struggle to get it in there) and bigger holes to tuck the tag ends in to so my line doesn't tangle on them after my wire is secured. Easy to do quickly and easily with cold hands and no tools.

Got a few hours to go fuck with mine this morning. Managed to get it to do the interference shit in 7' but it cooperated everywhere deeper. Messed with settings a bit but for the most part it just seemed to come and go randomly. It was too fucking cold to have my fingers out of mitts so I gave up on the bone rod. Opposite, big bay has everything mission bay does and a little more. It has the same shallower habitats plus the deeper rockpiles and stuff. Mission is only like 30' deep max and the big bay has spots that are like 65'.

California has some of the best fishing in the United states, you've got everything from Ice fishing to warm saltwater fishing, pristine alpine lakes, mighty rivers filled with species like Steelhead, Salmon, Sea Run Cutthroat trout, Sea run Browns, Brookies and Lahontan Cutthroat trout, Golden trout, Specific variations of Rainbows to certain rivers, Kokanee, land locked Chinook salmon. And then youve got the ocean, lingcod, california halibut, all kinds of rockfish, Red Tail perch for surf fishing and in socal youve got warm water varieties of fish as well, everything from yellow tail to mahi mahi to albacore.

California is the shit for fishing, and its beautiful rugged and everything you'd want out of a state, Northern California is heaven on earth, possibly the most beautiful place on earth, and Nor Californians are exceptionally rugged people even the hippies.

If you don't go there, your missing out on truly one of the most diverse fisheries on the planet and you will only have your ignorance to blame.

You can get a day pass pretty cheap in Michigan and there's some excellent fishing here. The great lakes and many river systems mean access to smallmouth and largemouth bass as well ass walleye, trout, salmon, bluegill, northern pike, yellow perch, spotted gar, freshwater drum, muskie, and I've even seen lake sturgeon. Northern Michigan in particular is absolutely gorgeous in the summer and fall months. I definitely recommend checking out the sleeping bear national shoreline. There's a ton of free camping space in the area if you're down for some real backwoods camping and lake Michigan is beautiful.

Guess it depends on the state and costs and what the fishing spots are like. I have never been asked for my license when I’m fishing canals and ponds in industrial areas, but the DNR people will creep the popular spots, especially if you’re on a boat. Charters and private lakes with a daily fee will typically have people covered so no license required, but that costs $$$.

The one upside is you can buy the damn license on your phone these days, so it’s not like you need to hit a new bait shop or Bass Pro or even worse, Walmart, with each new state when you find a spot to fish.

If it’s anything like the bullseye sneks, look for some underwater grass and run a Mepps over the top of it. Got a handful of them on Blue Fox Vibrax spinners as well. They love to lay in the grass and ambush shit as it swims above. Don’t go with a huge bait, their jaws are strong and mourh isn’t that big so a #2 Mepps will land some good size sneks without them spitting it back out. If they strike once and you don’t hook them, they’re nearly impossible to hook again unless they’re protecting fry.

Good info. Have come close to catching one the few times i've targeted them but have committed a few mistakes. Picked up this boat for free from a friend and will be hitting some of my spots this summer. Beefed up my tackle and will mod frogs with velcro on the top(catches in the mouth more) and opening the hooks up just a little. Might try nose hooking flukes with a smaller stouter hook like SeaMoney does.

Yeah BC and California dont really compare. I just hope we get solar power and blow the dams in nor cal so we can get better flows in the rivers, Salmon/Steelhead fishing is my favorite fishing I'm going to Fish the Eel river, Smith River, Trinity River, Van Duzen river, and the Mad river in a few weeks when the flows come down. I grew up with the Eel river as my backyard and now i live in Northern Nevada which is shit compared to cali, the Sierras are awesome for fishing trout and Pyramid lake is a great fishery but my favorite fishing is river fishing, I'm moving soon to Medford though, cant wait to fish rivers again.

That's me m8, Medford has the Rogue river and a few lakes around it so it's got good winter run salmon/steelhead and if the flies are right it's got summer run stuff as well, but the main reason I'm moving there is to be closer to the ocean so I can fish for rockfish/lingcod in the summer and salmonids in the winter.

I don't if it is everywhere, but it is some places because it doesn't create a nice neat hole like an auger does, it creates rough hole with a big weak spot in the ice around it that doesn't freeze back over as thick as the ice around it. Make sure to spend a little extra for the decent ones, and make sure to check it before each cast, but they are definitely worth it. I slung a spoon off one time, and it flew about 300 feet like a trebuchet payload before disappearing forever into Davy Jones' locker. There are lots of youtube videos that show people catching big fish on small poles. My favorite was a 12 pound king fish that was caught in the ocean on a kids fishing pole and they has to spear it just to be able to get it up into the boat.

Look at your fishing regulations. Some places have laws for maximum hole size so as to not create a hazard, it would be hard to keep a hole at less than 10 inches with an axe if the ice is any kind of thick. Other areas (mostly those that allow spearing) just require you to mark the hole before you leave if it is over a certain size.

Give it a shot, but use some serious caution. If it isn't 4+ inches, you have a serious chance of going through just from variable thickness or even melting if it's a warm day. If you can't get real ice spikes, find something like a screwdriver you can use to haul yourself out of the ice if it breaks. Check the ice every few steps if it's even close to questionable.

But yeah, you can cut through thinnish ice with an axe and probably nobody will care if it's not specifically illegal. Bring a large branch out to leave by the hole to indicate its location for others safety if you cut a hole more than 8 or so inches across. In the north, at least, extreme early ice can be fished just like it was before it was frozen over, the fish don't change habits much until the oxygen starts to drop and plants die.

I don’t get the allure of using bait while fishing. If I was looking to feed myself of course it makes sense but I fish as a form of recreation tricking fish with an artificial fly (or even a lure god help me) is more rewarding than rigging up a fishes normal prey and having it try to eat it.

You can fish for larger fish relatively easily. I toss a livey out, and then I lure fish as well. Often I can use the struggle of a lure to bring fish in to inspect and eat the bait. I use baitfeeder reels on live baits so a fish can run with the bait freely, and my rod doesn't fly into the water.

I agree, only exception to that would be flylining a sardine on a sportboat. It's a lot more active than soaking a chunk. Aside from that the only time I used bait is on rockfishing trips, but those are more freezer filler trips than fishing for sport.

I did this for a while. I liked the idea of going clandestine, and people are always cutting back bamboo around here, so I got several and dried them out, then attached about 20 feet of mono, and some cheap store bought popping flies trailed by a little nymph. I even tried some homemade hooks and found feathers just for the hell of it. I could catch all sorts of panfish, but rarely could I keep the hook in anything really big. It's very fun, but unwieldy in the long term. I got a BnM black widow to take the place of the bamboo, because I still like the challenge of it, but wanted something I could logically pack up and transport easily. A big ass bamboo pole isn't going to fit that bill.

HahaThe King of all game fish. People come all around the world to come to Florida so they can go to the Florida Keys just so they can have a once in a life time chance to catch the biggest and most powerful fish in the Ocean. Not only that but I'm looking forward to buying my Van Staal next month and waiting for the water to warm up so I can fish with my buddy who's gonna help me learn the ways to catch Tarpon. I mean he slays frank tanks I rarely see him catch mini Snook like I catch his are normally past the 27 inch then again he does use bigger baits and he has a Van Staal which can handle these tanks.

Anywho I gotta leave for work got Groceries to bag, and floors to clean tonight at work 37 hours this week

Yeah, I'm super into the whole single pole, single bait style of fishing. Now I'm just straight-up micro fishing. After work, I'll hit up the local urban lake on my way home.

There's something super relaxing about not having to deal with fucking reels and other tackle equipment. All I carry is the pole (with pre-tied line), the bait, and tweezers. Pic related is the bait. I highly recommend and shill it to everyone. Each bait is like the size of a cooked grain of rice. For micro fishing ya gotta cut them in half. The best part is that they're super elastic and super durable.

Are the depths off? I've been researching fish finders and Navionics/LakeMasters so no first game experience but I think they come with depth adjustment to match the contours up with fluctuating water levels.

All the reviews I've read praise them pretty heavily but I don't know if the $150 is worth it vs just researching the night before on their site for free.

I would say a 3000-4000 spinning reel or 200 baitcaster with 15-30lb braid and a fluoro leader. Rod between 6.5 and 7.5 feet, line weight kinda depends on what kind of presentations you want to throw.

I found an old Ryobi surf casting reel in a garage and used it as my salt reel for a couple of years until I could invest in better. It was not the best reel ever or anything, but it landed my first and still my PB speckled trout and all sorts of other little fish. I still have it as a backup just in case another of my reels shits the bed.

Just buy a Penn Fierce III 4000 buy 30lb Power Pro Braid color is important because it needs to either blend in with the water color or so the fish can't see it a lot of water bass are in is stained. So a green moss would work. I'd go with the new Super Slick 8 made by Power Pro.
Use 7 inch Zoom Worm either pumpkin seed or a June bug red on either a 4/0 or 5/0 Extra Wide Gap hook
And I normally use I think it's a 3/4 bullet weight. Cast it out let it sink then do a pop pop let sink then repeat. Frogs I find normally will spook most bass.
