in an emergency you could definitely signal a rescue as long as you're not dumb enough to blind the chopper pilot
better than a flare too because the pilot can follow the beam back to exactly where the stranded person is

i do carry a laser but i'm kind of afraid to use it most places. i have some good photo ops planned with it out in the bush and mountains but haven't deployed it yet. i bought it on eBay from chiner and once it arrived i realized it's unlegal for me to own.

i've gotten drunk a few times and lit up the night sky a few times which people would have been able to see for like 100km away, but not anywhere near air traffic or where anyone could come get me

How? The point of a laser is hard to notice unless it's pointed at a surface in front of you or at your eyes. Neither works for a pilot or any kind of driver who's looking forward through a windshield or such.
