It's supposed to be a shelter in a situation where you have to survive, so either you have to find every branch at a perfect size, especially the longer one, OR you have to cut them, but realistically cutting such branches with a knife would take too much time...
Wouldn't just hiding from the rain at the basis of a tree, and trying to make a fire be "easier" than spending hours building this ? For a single night I mean.
For multiple nights, I suppose this could be of some use, though you'd need to build a bottom part too, or you'll be soaked and cold.
