hey /out/,

first time on this board, the sticky said questions about gear related to hiking etc, are okay, and /fa/ failed me with this. I want to order a backpack from the US (I'm german), but I want to know more about the quality first. It's this roll top from Archival. I don't want to hike for days or climb the k2, I intend to use it on a daily basis. Is the fabric good and durable? Isn't 250 bucks not too cheap for something made in the US?

I remember seeing bags like this from Cheaper Than Dirt that were Swedish milsup for under $10-$20 a few years back. Though I suspect their sources have dried up. Keep looking.

I know that the straps aren't padded and that it's not as practical as backpacks exclusively designed for outdoor activities. Nevertheless, I like the design, its simplicity, okay? My question was: is the fabric good or not?

And is 250 bucks really that much? It seemed rather inexpensive to me. We have an outdoor supplier in my town (huge chain), and they have a shitload of bags and their prices didn't differ that much. I saw a nice fjällräven at the same price, or ar they shit? How much would you spend on a backpack?

Hey,

ich weis, dass es verlockend wirkt so einen Rucksack zu besitzen aber glaub mir das Geld ist es im Endeffekt nicht wert.

Nach 2 Woche fragst du dich, warum du so viel dafür ausgegeben hast - ist bei jedem Menschen so.

Ich würde dir entweder ASMC empfehlen, ein Online Shop für Outdoor und Military in Deutschland mit gebrauchten BW Sachen oder komplett neu. Schau da mal unter transport und Seesäcke.

Falls du da nichts finden kannst dann such auf Amazon einfach mal nach französischen oder schweizerischen Pionierrucksäcken oder russische Rucksäcke.

Schlaf am besten mal ne Woche drüber, wenn du den Rucksack dann immer noch willst, bestell ihn dir. Ich glaube die Qualität ist nicht besser oder schlechter als andere Segeltuch und Leder Rucksäcke.

die Optik ist halt schon ein großer Punkt bei mir, ich wollte auch auf keinen Fall etwas was zu sehr nach Military oder Camping aussieht. Brauche halt für kleine Trips (20-30km) und den Alltagsgebrauch keine tausend Einzeltaschen außen dran.

Ist denn Fjällräven ok? Klar, da zahlste auch für die Marke, aber die kommen schon eher an die gewünschte Optik ran.

Ich hatte mir für die Uni diesen HEX RS gekauft - 100 €. Natürlich (fast)auch nur wegen der Optik.

Gut, zu der Zeit hab ich gearbeitet und konnte mir was leisten, im Nachhinein dneke ich aber es hätte noch genug billigere Alternativen gegeben.

You'll sure look so hip with that old school gentelmanly aesthetic with that fabric and unique leather strap.

Forgetting to take something out, after you just closed it, then having to unroll it again will make you look even cooler!

Bags like that were popular before... get this... zippers.

A roll down top works well in bag used for the outdoors, as you're usually busy doing stuff. And only stop very occasionally.

Not for 9-5 stuff where there's no telling what and when you'll need something.

Also, there must be some sort of raid/spillover going on with the similar type posts like these.

anon said before, that amount of money is obscene for bag if only aesthetics are considered in the balance, specially since you can get ten similar looking second hand military issue for that price, pic related (swiss rucksack) goes from 19 to 30 cdn$ around here. That's probably the main reason you get so many vitriolic responses.
While looking for second hand bags, make sure the waterproofing is still good and there are no damages you can't repair. And if you're serious about hiking with it, it would be a good idea to look for one that has or supports an internal frame.
Now If you're still looking to spend 200$ no matter what, look into these:

I knew a dude. He was a total Fjällrävenbitch. Bought almost everything from them. Pants ripped, buttons flew off, shoulderstraps from rucksacks tore, he kept waxing his sooper G-1000 fabric with original Fjällräven Wax only to be soaked after a solid rain, while I grinned with my Bunderwehr poncho. I wouldn't recommend their stuff. Fjällräven established themselves pretty well in the market so they don't care about the quality like they used too.
If you want a oldschool backpack then just buy the swiss pioneer rucksack like >>201398
said. There is also a lederol(a nylon/leather mix) version. 100% rainproof and will outlast you. If you end up buying it, make sure the rucksack has padded shoulderstraps. Pic related is not padded and will cut your arms if heavy loaded.

I'm currently narrowing down all the possible choices and looked up some other military backpacks.
What about the M39 of the swedish army? It comes close to the swiss backpack, which is sold out here in Germany. The swedish one, though, is still availabe (pic related)

I also fancy the so called Gebirgsrucksack from the german army, has anyone actually one? Is it good, durable fabric?

Keep in mind that I want to use the backpacks on a daily basis, not for camping or hikes longer than 30km.

Find one of these if you can. Simple is better, plenty of room, and comes with straps if you need to throw more stuff on it. That said, most of the Euro milsurp rucksacks are pretty dependable.

its actually 2 backpacks in one plus a fanny pack which are all removable, its made to be highly modular so you can use it for whatever task at hand. it gets even heavier with the rifle case i put into it for hunting. but i can slim it down to 4-6lbs if i need a frame or not, the internal backpack that zippers in has straps/gel back but no frame.
its also made to be durable not lightweight, i can easily see it lasting 50+ years, even the zippers.
nothing bothers me more than gear wearing out so i dont mind the extra weight, even when my legs are burnt to fucking crisps with lactic acid. but the pack is extremely well designed, with the ergonomic frame/back gel 80 lbs feels like 40.
you get what you pay for.

ive done casual trips with new campers where ive strapped a large cooler to my back. i can hardly think of anything i cant lug around to make camping for fun for casuals, or make longer hunting trips possible when i get more free time.
