Alltrails has its uses, if I'm on a daywalk and want to record my path it's good. There aren't many mapped trails in my part of the world so I don't often use it to follow them. Also when using it to follow a trail it constantly alerts me when it thinks I've strayed a few metres off the path,I actually switch off notifications because it's so annoying.

If you get riled up about people using phones /out/, you're probably one of those anxiety-ridden "muh connect with nature" escapist weirdos. A pragmatic, competent /out/ist should see a phone as just another tool to take pictures of cool bugs, write down notes, etc. If you can't carry your phone without obsessively browsing the internet, or if you depend on it to navigate instead of learning to use a map, the problem is not the phone, the problem is you.

The funny thing about being out, is a lot of the time I don't have service.
I don't know how to explain this to OP.
But when I go out. I turn my phone off.
Maybe I turn it on if I want to take a photo or video.

Audubon let’s you search for birds based on things like wing shape, area, coloration etc. I know it has bird calls but I’m not sure if they work without internet. I think the rest of the stuff can be downloaded to work offline.

CalTopo is my go-to navigation app. I use the website to download maps at home, print them in a large format (14x14), then have the same map on my phone that in my pack.
