>>2024977what I do is put a table spoon or 2 of vaseline into a ziplock and put a dozen or so cotton balls in there with it. then close the bag and smoosh it around until all the balls are completely covered in the vaseline. You want them completely coated because 1) it's your fuel and 2) it waterproofs the balls. If you get them wet, you can still use them.
When you're ready to use one, pinch it open so you can get at those precious dry fibers inside. Give it a little floof and drop some sparks on it.
It's fun to bring these family camping because even a 5 year old can spark one of these with a ferro rod and a scraper, so it gets the kids feeling big and important.
